You can go to Cuba. Cuba doesn't stop Americans from coming. It's the American's that stop you. So you fly into Cuba from Mexico or Canada or whatever... But American regulations prohibit you from spending money there, and they consider stay longer than one day proof that you spent money. There are ways to get a license and legally go. You can be a journalist on assignment, you can be a student on study, you can be a humanitarian, and other ways.

The most common way to visit Cuba on tourism (which is illegal) is through two-legged flight from Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, or somewhere else nearby. Some places like Canada will not book US origin passengers to Cuba, so you can't go Detroit-Toronto-Havana. But you can book separately. Or, if you're near Detroit or Buffalo, you can drive into Canada and book a flight from Toronto or something.

Cuba will not stamp your passport. But you will end up with double stamps in your departing country, which is suspicious. Which is why Mexico is the most popular route, because you can bribe the officers there not to stamp you on your way back.

PS... bring cash to Cuba, your credit/debit cards will not work.

I have "heard" that it works like this. Fly to Cancun. Walk over to the Air Cubana gate and buy a ticket. You will be issued a Visa. Fly to Cuba. Show them your passport, they will stamp a piece of paper and put it in your passport. When you leave, they will take the paper. When you reenter the us, don't have ANYTHING Cuban on you. Your passport will only have a Mexico visa in it. And, you better know what the weather was like in Cancun. Come back with a couple of Cancun souvenirs in case they check your bags.

Keep in mind, Cuba is a huge destination for Canadians and Europeans. There are many tourists there. Oh, and BRING TOILET PAPER. And, the local population could seriously use anything you can spare, shirts, shoes, medicine anything. If you want to help out, bring thing extras of things to leave with you.

serious question, besides family there, why would you ever want to go to cuba?

Everyone I know who has been there said it's absolutely beautiful and a lot of fun.

And yeah, go through Mexico and bribe someone to not have your passport stamped on the way back.

Or...become a dual citizen of the US and somewhere else(New Zealand for me) and travel to Cuba on the non-US passport
