I want to start following the MLS...

  • What should I know to get me excited about the league?

hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.

  • Honestly it's hard to follow from Detroit. There are only a couple teams in driving distance and neither are that attractive of an option to follow. I recently moved to St Louis and among other reasons, chose to follow Sporting KC which is a bit of a drive but I can make it to some games. I think going to a game with a good atmosphere, and sitting in a solid supporters section would go a long way towards you becoming a fan. Besides that, the MLS online package is really cheap. I got it at the start of the season for like 30 bucks and now watch most games that are going on. If you can't make it to games I would suggest at least finding a team with players you like. Also, there are a few good MLS podcasts that you could listen to to catch yourself up with the league and get a feel for what's going on.

  • Also don't start following the league for quality. If you watch the international game or European leagues you will be disappointed. But it is our national league, it is growing very fast, and it is entertaining if you go into it knowing it's not the EPL. Find a team and roll with it.

  • Go Sporting!

    KC_SPARTAN

  • They at least seem like a real soccer league now. When they first came out and tried to seem cool with goofy team names and logos, they were such a joke. Kansas City Wiz? Tampa Bay Mutiny? Dallas Burn? lol

Yea and no one really cared about them til they rebranded two years ago to Sporting and built Livestring Sporting Park which might be the best stadium in the league for fans. Now they are the most popular thing going in KC, maybe not saying much, but the fans are crazy there.

The crazy manager is gone. Hopefully the ship is in the process of being righted.

They are more popular than the Kansas City Chiefs?

I just came back from Europe, and obviously they had soccer on tv with the Euro-Cup. I have never really liked soccer, but not knowing the language, it was sports, so it eliminated the barrier. If soccer is your thing, cool. But I really don't know how people can watch it on tv consistently. I am sure going to a game is pretty cool if it is in the right city.

Watching, what is basically minor league soccer, on tv consistently sounds like a horrible idea.

Perhaps I should rephrase, largest growing fanbase. Of course the chiefs are still the biggest thing around but Sporting is growing almost exponentially and has a rabid fan base at its core. I guess I can't complain if you just don't like soccer. I really can't stand watching baseball, though I do follow the tigers. We follow the MLS because it is our biggest local league and it is not minor. Some great players still do play here. Maybe not the best but there is talent. There is nothing like going to a game though, and that's something 95%of American fans will not experience with overseas leagues.

  • I'll starting seriously following the league when Detroit gets a team. Otherwise, I have no real connection or desire for any of the teams.Thierry Henry being my favorite player of all time, I am kind of a NY red bulls fan...but not to the point where I tune in just to watch their games unless I just stumble upon them. I love soccer, but unlike teams in Europe, with amazingly dynamic players, there's nothing drawing me to support a team unless they're representing where I come from.

You can't just switch teams. That's not the way things work. I lived in Philadelphia during the Union's first season. I went to their first-ever home game.

The problem with this is right now Detroit won't get and can't support a team. It would be a little like chicago right now where they get like 1/10 of their stadium filled. There are too many other sports options in the area.

    msuhockeycj

  • Screw MLS!! Go watch some good soccer in the European leagues. If you wanted to start watching football, would you go watch the NFL or go watch NFL Europe?? Watch the best or watch the rest, its that simple...

So do yourself a favor and get yourself Fox Soccer Channel, and enjoy some of the best soccer the world has to offer.

Fair point. I root for the teams I grew up rooting for and the teams of the city I live in now unless they are playing each other then I root for my original team.

Eh I partly agree with this. I think there is a large soccer fanbase in Detroit because there is significant diversity in the area. In addition, a large hunk of the season only has to compete with baseball season, so the "sports options"aren't really all impacting soccer. I think the major problem is simply economics. The Detroit economy is struggling and thus, at this point in time, it seems difficult to get people to start buying into (literally) something new.
