IT Experts - How to install a wireless 'repeater' in my home?

  • I have a gigantic mcMansion home. (peace) and my router is next to my cable modem in the basement. I have a booster antenna, but my wireless signal is weak on the 2nd floor.

I have a standard Buffalo G router that has worked well. but I have an extra router laying around and was told I could put this somewhere else in my home...on the main level, where it can receive and 'repeat' the wireless signal so it is stronger on my 2nd floor.

Anyone have simple instructions of a link to how to accomplish this feat?

Does it receive and repeat or do I plug it into an ethernet plug elsewhere?

    Many thx

  • It should receive and repeat. If it does not, try the ethernet plug.

  • Directions are different depending on the brand of router. List your router deets?

    Main router is Buffalo WBR2-G54S

Extra router is a Netgear WGR614v7

  • The Internet pixies that carry the signal must be tired. Sprinkle sugar and maple syrup all over your wireless router and that should energize them enough to carry a signal throughout your house.

for the Netgear router, you should be able to log into the settings page in your browser.

Plug into ethernet port of Netgear router.
Type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
Enter in credentials (if you didn't change them user is: Admin pass is: password).
Should be an option that says either, wireless repeater or wireless bridge, enter all the information for the signal you're trying to extend.

**Some steps may be a little different depending on how old the router is/firmware version. Google is your best friend for this, but these are your basic steps.

The capabilities totally depend on the router model, I don't know much about Netgear models. I've always used either Linksys or Apple Airport Extreme.

  • What you want to do is called a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) and usually you need to have a multiple routers from the same manufacturer if you want to do this. You're probably not going to get your Buffalo and your Linksys to work nicely together wirelessly.

Since you're such a baller, look on Buffalo's site and pick out another router that supports WDS and follow their instructions for setting it up.

  • If you can afford a gigantic McMansion home then you should be shelling out for IT support instead of trying to get free help here.
