Clearly you know nothing about the Irish and their first 100 years or so in the United States. Not trying to claim we had it as bad as the indigenous people's or the African Americans, but I can assure you it was no picnic for those who were forced to leave their homeland due to horrible policies enacted by the British Monarchy. Irish immigrants were certainly treated as 3rd and 4th class citizens.

You fail and obviously only know history of the last 250 years. As many as 95% of the Americas indigenous population died as a result of disease. The disease was a direct result of the Europeans but disease in no way constitutes genocide.
In direct comparison the Irish were invaded multiple times by the English. The first forced the Celtics to convert to Christianity (no death numbers because it was so long ago), then in a strange turnabout the English invaded and killed millions of Irish Catholics, then their ports were blocked and non potato crops seized by the English to create a famine that killed 9 million people. The catholics in Ireland were offered food for converting away from being Catholic. All in all the Irish people had to deal with at least 6 invasions that all killed 100's of thousands to millions of Irish by the English.
The indigenous populations of the Americas were largely untouched by the outside world for thousands of years. The Irish have been pestered and harassed for nearly the same amount of time.

Protestants who made up the overwhelming majority at most universities during the turn of the century used "Fighting Irish" as a derogatory term in referring to Notre Dame and it's predominantly Catholic student body. Notre Dame liked it and ran with it. But technically it is derogatory term and should be banned.
This is from the free dictionary so who knows But Hoosiers buckeyes and tarheels were all derogatory terms, so they should be banned as well.
As a nickname, Hoosier was but one of a variety of disparaging terms arising in the early 19th century for the inhabitants of particular states. For example, Texans were called Beetheads, Alabamans were Lizards, Nebraskans were Bug-eaters, South Carolinians were Weasels, and Pennsylvanians were Leatherheads. People in Missouri might have had it worst of allthey were called Pukes. Originally, these names were probably taken up by people living in neighboring states, but belittled residents adopted them in a spirit of defiant pride, much as American colonists turned the derisive term Yankee into a moniker for their spirit of rebellion. Today, most of these frontier nicknames have disappeared from the landscape. A few like Okie still exist with much of their original animus. Others survive as nicknames for the sports teams of state universitiesthe North Carolina Tarheels, the Ohio Buckeyes, and so onfighting words only on the playing field or court.

Perhaps, but I have read that germ warfare was used in some instances such as giving the tribes infected blankets. Not sure if this is true, but if it is then it would be considered a form of genocide in my book.
Good post though, I didn't know all of that about the Irish and the English.

At least with Chief Illniwek the tribe actually taught the kids who did the dance the proper way to do it every summer before the sports season, endorsed the use of the mascot, and were partners in the whole deal. Yet, the NCAA knows better because... like North Dakota... one relatively small group protested.

I believe you've been misinformed. But if you have proof that what you say is true, and that Chief Illiniwek was not a purely fictional character who wore inauthentic attire and demonstrated a dance choreographed by Boy Scouts based on Native Americans dances performed on reservations for the entertainment of paying white customers in the 1920's, I'd like to see it.
Oh, and Notre Dame is an Irish Catholic school so they can call themselves the Fighting Irish. If one of the Sioux tribes founds a college, they would be free to call themselves the Fighting Sioux. (Incidentally, the Chief Illiniwek costume that most of us grew up on was made by a Sioux from South Dakota.)

Oh, and I was too lazy to look up the info online.

If tNCAA won't let teams use Indian names, why can ND use Irish?
