"I'll Stop World Melt w/ You" - Greatest Pop Song Ever?

  • Guys don't stop the world to melt with chicks. The most we'll do is pause the DVR for a fuck - and only if she can see the TV from her vantage point.

Two way tie between the Cure and the Cure for me, Friday, I'm in Love or Just Like Heaven

    +1

Friday I'm In Love is amazing, probably my favorite song by the Cure.

  • It's a great song, and it's definitely one of those songs that can just hit you.

  • I am disappoint. Good discussion so far of 80s pop songs, but not one mention of Depeche Mode. So many good choices there - Blasphemous Rumors, Personal Jesus, People are People, Just Can't Get Enough, Enjoy the Silence, etc. Those guys are the fucking kings of pop, with The Cure in a solid 2nd place.

    A few others:

    Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Duran Duran - Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Head Over Heels
    Outfield - Your Love
    a-Ha - Take On Me

Solid post, but, in my opinion, The Cure >>> Depeche Mode.

Haha thanks. I wouldn't disagree with putting The Cure on top. They and Depeche Mode are top 2 easily. I tend to prefer Depeche Mode's brooding melancholy to the generally more upbeat tunes of The Cure, but I love them both.

Some may disagree but I love these kinds of threads. Not sure why sometimes tHaters crap on gHost for creating these discussions. It makes the board more entertaining, and I'm a sucker for nostalgia.

Also, how did I forget Situation by Yaz? Pure 80s.

  • I enjoy a good fart. The ones that sort of express how you are feeling about certain subject matter. For example, if your are in an elevator and the two people next to you carry on a conversation with one guy name dropping who he had lunch with for the envy me effect, I let out a slow sbd, wait until I'm positive it won't follow me out and then remove myself from the elevator.

No offense, but I've got a few issues with this post:

    1) The discussion wasn't supposed to be about 80s pop, the thread was supposed to only be about one song, "I'll Stop The World and Melt With You" which I think is the greatest pop song ever recorded.

    2) There is no question in my mind that The Cure was and is a better band that DM. Sure, DM is up there, but The Cure was just way more dynamic and Robert Smith was IMO way more creative. The Cure also released a lot more material.

    3) DM isn't necessarily "more upbeat" than The Cure. It's a completely different style of music. "17 Seconds" "Faith" "Pornography" and "The Top" are for the most part downers, but The Cure's bread and butter is extremely upbeat, "Head On The Door", "Kiss Me", etc...

BACK to the original post: I still think you'll struggle to find a song so well known and so absolutely perfect than "I'll Stop The World and Melt w/ You" - it really is quite a remark able song and unlike other one hit wonders it still sounds great today.

  • No - Good Loving by the Young Rascals is the best pop song ever.

I don't really have a problem with the original premise - IE - melt - but its just not uptempo enough - its got that dark 80's English vibe that made growing up in the 80's so lame.

I would be even more old school and say some of those 1968ish pop songs like Time of the season or Live for Today or Bus Stop. Those are all painfully catchy.

I was floating around in the pool earlier today reading my book with the radio on and that song came on the radio. I paused, placed my book on my dry chest, and enjoyed the song, which I hadn't heard in a while. I gotta say, I've heard a lot of music over the years and I honestly can't think of a better pure pop song. It's sincere, fun, a little dark, fast, and lyrics and music are perfect compliments to one another. I think it's the greatest pop song ever recorded and still sounds fresh and great 20+ years later.

I am assuming you are talking about the version recorded by "Bowling for Soup." whistling
