I'm about to spend $500 on a handbag for my wife

  • Spartan_MD said...

This is a MAC level budget.

If you're going to get anything of quality, you're going to have to spend at least 3x that amount and will have to go to Somerset and 12Oaks doesn't have Chanel, LV, Prada etc.

Yup. My wife has Gucci, Chanel and Prada. None of that coach crap.

Keeping the sunshiners in check since 2000.

Someone please shoot me before I pull this off. FTR, this is twice the amount I paid for my first car, a sweet '72 Plymouth Duster with more rust than sheet metal. Happy Valentines day. honey.........

    Want a second wife?

I don't know if I could ever spend that much money on a purse, even if I had the money. I just don't get it. But, if someone like you buys me one, then I'll take it!

  • My wife rolled into the hotel here in Montreal sporting this bag! Fuck you Chanel!

I only heard about Gucci for the first time about 2 years ago. I can buy a purse that looks the same thing for $25!

  • $500 doesn't go very far in the designer handbag department. The wife has a couple LVs, Burberry, Tory Burch, etc...redic what that stuff costs but if I gave her a hard time she'd rightfully point out the same about my cars/watches/etc. I don't mind dropping some scratch on her from time to time, clears the way for me to drop $ on my hobbies/interests without any pushback.

It's odd to me how many of you see a $500 bag as some kind of threat to your manhood.

    I don't really get it.

You shouldn't talk about your wife that way nerd

Your wife might have an expensive purse, but the draw back is that she has you. You're probably the most miserable person on this board, and you can't stand that someone else is buying their wife a nice gift.

  • You know, when I read threads like this I start to understand why so many of the men on here have such a low view of women. It's hard for me to fathom women who expect to have a dozen or more handbags that cost $500+ each. blank

I'd be thrilled with a $50 or $75 Vera Bradley and would probably use it for five or more years. I can think of 101 things I'd rather spend the other $400 on.

To the single men - Not all women expect this kind of bling. We're hard to find, but we are out there.

  • I like designer bags myself (I am female, my SN is a nod to the Beastie Boys in case you were wondering). The problem with Coach is that they are the number one purse brand in the world. What female really wants a purse that every other female has? Nobody. Which is why Coach is so ingenious, because females who start buying Coach purses, keep buying Coach purses. Every year. And they rarely carry their older purses because, even if they are in good condition, they know that every other girl who carries a Coach purse can tell what year/season it was released (or they are just plain bored with it). And they can't really resell them because the secondary market (like eBay) is flooded.

The guy who talked to the French women is spot on. Classic style is the way to go. The higher end brands know this, and often release the same styles in different colors over multiple years (see LV, Jimmy Choo, Chanel, and my fav, Marc Jacobs). Then the stigma of having "last years bag" is gone, and it becomes more of a collectible item. You can also take advantage of the secondary market and get a much higher quality bag for much cheaper.

Anyways, this is all probably falling on deaf ears, but I would suggest asking your wife if she wants a particular brand b/c that's what all her friends are carrying, or if it's because she truly thinks it is a quality and timeless (not trendy) luxury item. If it's the latter, have her check out eBay or Bonanza or Yoogi's Closet for some better brands at less cost.

  • Just gave my wife a $500 gift card for her to buy a purse. She uses the same purse pretty much every day and has had the current one for about 3-4 years. I think $500 is fine for something she uses every day for a couple of years. I wouldn't be thrilled if she had a 10 purse collection.

Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub

Now I've found the 2nd biggest scam in America - designer bags. Number 1 is the wedding cartel. JFC, I don't understand the logic behind all the spending on this kind of crap.

I think the correct term is the Wedding Industrial Complex. My wife likes Kate Spade purses, but always buys them at the outlet.

I can't really say much, I need new hockey skates and will probably drop a couple hundred.

That's just it - she would never buy this for herself, that's why I'm getting it for her. Bonus that she also doesn't expect it. In fact, we rarely buy gifts for each other for anything -Christmas, birthdays, etc. Let me ask you this: If one was given to you for a gift, would you take it back?

No, I would not return a thoughtful gift. If it was a purse that I could use, I would use it and not hurt the giver's feelings. I do think I would feel self-conscious using it though.

If you can afford it and your wife will be thrilled, then more power to you. She's fortunate to have a thoughtful husband. I think my response was more the idea that there are women who think that having many, many handbags that cost so much is completely normal. We just run in totally different circles, I guess.

And I feel badly for any younger guys reading this who think that this is normal behavior for women. I can't think of anyone in my circle of friends and acquaintances (that spans all economic strata) who would expect this.

Sometimes when I read this board I realize how wealthy I am not. smile_msu

I'm one of those women too. I don't pay attention to that stuff anyway. And I don't even like most of it, so I don't get the appeal.

I agree with all of this. And trust me, my wife doesn't have many handbags like this.

  • My GF recently told me that she isn't into the high end designer stuff, which kind of surprised me. She looks stylish, and we've been out with other couples and the women are asking her where she gets stuff or how she puts an outfit together. Some of those women have the billboard fashion concept, and wouldn't wear anything that didnt announce what it was, just so you know what they spent. She says she enjoys the compliment of someone assuming she spent a ton of cash more than she would enjoy it if they merely recognized it as being really expensive. (

The GF also told me that she received a gift card to a Coach store, and when she went in, she asked if they had anything that didn't say "Coach" on it. The clerk looked at her like she was crazy.

Personally, I can't tell the difference, and if the GF doesn't want it anyway, I'm happy to use the money on a weekend trip or something else instead.

Neither of us have a problem with someone who wants to buy a designer bag/luggage or whatever, it's just not for us, even if the money is there to do so. I realize that some people actually like the designer styles, but I think far too many wouldn't know the difference if you switched labels and price tags.

+1 to Dendro, Beaumont Chimes and Professor Booty for not being slaves to the fashion mags.
