I'm going to cut Painter some slack

  • Seriously.

He's had a rough past day or so.

He lost a former committed 4-star recruit to Kentucky:

His team sat in an airplane for 3 hours, were sent home to sleep for 3 hours then had to take a 4:45 AM bus to EL.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/purdue-boarded-2-planes-and-ended-up-taking-a-bus-before-losing-83-58-to-no-9-michigan-state/2012/01/21/gIQAKW6lGQ_story.html

His team then got crushed by MSU.

Hummel, a player he has to feel protective about, gets taunted in a below the belt fashion, and doesn't make a basket.

Then he believes, whether correct or not, that Dawson, a former local recruit who was committed to him and was their top Plan A priority, talked trash to him during the game.

That's what you call a rough 24 hours guys.

Perhaps he should call Dawson's mother and chastise her for allowing her son to make such a rash decision in going to MSU? That should make him feel better.

  • Agreed. Everyone has bad days. Seemed like a rough week for Painter. I know he's expected to be above all of that, but you know what, we all have bad days at work. Most of us just don't do it in front of a national tv audience.

As far as the recruiting thing, it seems like Purdue's basketball program has a few things in common with MSU football. Surrounded by some serious powerhouse programs and often coming in second for some big time recruits (Dawson, Zeller, Hartman, kid he lost to KY yesterday, etc.)

That has to wear on a guy like Painter over time, never being able to take PU to the next level.

  • Karma. If he was responsible for Izzo's suspension, he can reap some more bad luck. If not, then I concede your point.

I'm not going to write any sympathy cards to him, but I can cut him some slack for today. I've always thought he was one of the good guys that Izzo has a lot of respect for.

  • Considering the missouri job in public was a big mistake. It downgraded the purdue basketball program. It would have been a lateral move. It's not like it was an nba job like Izzo. Now everyone could be using that against painter. if you looks at recruiting in the big ten now purdue is probably behind about 5 or 6 teams now in the big ten. Izzo and crean are destroying him.

Also, why wouldn't you just take the bus to EL to begin with? It's not that far.
