I'm not digging Pennsylvania

  • Sitting here in a janky ass service plaza in bumblefuck, PA. All there is a Roy Rogers. Dry ass burger and fries, no fountain drinks $7+.

And I don't know what it is about the people here, but it seems like they hit the pause button about 40 years ago and time just passed them by. Some of them are eye'n me typing this on my phone as if I am Marty McFly from BttF.

Need to get out here before this story gets any cooler.

  • You must be on I-80 near Grove City (north of Pittsburgh)! It's the midpoint between EL and Philly; and I felt the same way every time I pulled in.

The Love's truck stops in Alabama seem accurate

  • Stopped at one of these Roy Rogers truck stops on the way back from Philly a couple months ago... The burger and fries I ordered were by far the worst fast food meal I've ever had. And expensive.

  • If you could have held out a little longer(assuming you are heading back to MD) there is a Chick Fil A and a quality Roy Rogers in Hagerstown. It sucks that you ate at truck stop Roy's as the stand alone restaurant ones are pretty damn good.

  • Annoying travel rant - I was driving yesterday from Buffalo to Pittsburgh. On the turnpike between BUF and Erie, I'm hungry, just want some quick fast food.

Not only do they not have any billboards saying "Burger King - Exit 147", but they don't even have those blue signs right before the exit that tell you what kind of restaurants are there. Due to the way they set up the toll booths off of the highway, you can't see what restaurants are there from the road. I sure as shit wasn't going to waste time getting off only to find out that the only food available was Flo's Diner.

I was ready to spend a solid $10 of my money on food in that shithole state, instead I kept going until I crossed the PA line, where they had discovered the enlightened concept of actually telling drivers (through a 21st century invention called a "sign") what food options they had on an upcoming exit. My Arby's was delicious.

I'm pretty sure that's close to where the plane crashed on 9/11.

Sounds like you are at South Somerset. That service plaza is closing next week for reconstruction. Actually a complete leveling and new building. They delayed the closing to deal with the expected traffic from the Flight 93 Memorial dedication.

I think that Somerset was the one I recently stopped at which had no Pepsi product in the entire place. So no Mt. Dew if you need a sugar caffeine fix.

Turnpikes typically do not have signs for food establishments off the highway. They want you use the service plaza. I know that there are no food informational signs on the Ohio Turnpike either. There are signs for motels.

Yes I know that there are no service plazas on that part of the thruway.

The path to Maryland would also take you through the wonderful experience of Breezewood. Pennsylvania in its infinite wisdom, more likely corruption, did not make a direct connection between the turnpike and Interstate 70 where 70 heads south east to Baltimore and Washington. One must run a two block gantlet of gas stations, restaurants, fast food places and motels between the end of the connection from the turnpike and the beginning of I-70. By the way, the road from the turnpike in to Breezewood crosses I-70 without a connecting ramp.

Yes, but a) there are plazas every 30 miles in OH, and b) the OH plazas have multiple food options. The NY turnpike has 1 plaza in a 120 mile stretch, and all it had was a fing mcdonalds.

On my way to MD for good. Needed fuel and had to pee shrug. Looks like they are tearing the place down starting tomorrow. Maybe the people there were all the regulars saying goodbye.

I actually wound up detouring through Hagerstown. GPS said traffic was jacked up bad on 70 (30 min delay), and that's the way it told me to go. Seemed like a neat town.

Anyway... see attached pic as promised. pulling69 coffeehouse creeper style!

Well, you missed the Breezewood WAWA, something you need to follow up on if you are moving down here and are on the road and need fuel and food. Among other things, they have an awesome build-your-own sandwich touchpad setup and the food is excellent on a road trip or even just for a quick stop. I wish they had some stores up in Michigan and Ohio.
