I'm putting my dog down on Friday

  • This really sucks. She's 14 1/2 and it's time to put her out of her misery. She has horrible arthritis, she is mentally losing it, she just stands and stares at the wall, she doesn't eat anything anymore, she shits on herself and rolls in it at night, she can't lie down on her own...

I'm dreading tomorrow and know I'm going to cry my ass off. She was such a great dog, a true member of our family and a true friend to me.

However, I am glad she lived a rather long life. When I got her 14 years ago from the Humane Society, I never would have expected she would still be around until almost 2013. I'm lucky to have known her...

  • I'm sorry man, that sucks.

Are you having a vet come to your house to do it?

    chris14

  • +1 for your dog and for giving her a great life.

That's really the thing.. She could have been adopted by anyone at the humane society.. From someone who would have given her the life you did to someone that would have used her as bait in a dog fight. You gave her the best life you could have during the time she had and it sounds like she is lucky for it.

    Good luck tomorrow, never easy.

  • When I moved to Florida my dad took mine. He was 17. Found out when I flew up for thanksgiving. He forgot to tell me. Doing the right thing is tough.

I don't think it costs much more than having it done at the vet's. It's just a way to say goodbye in a more comforting place than at a sterile clinic.

It's called Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome or Dog Alzheimer's. We had to put our 14 year old dog down about 6 months ago for the same reason. No way around it...it's going to plain suck. But, as time goes on you will realize it was for the better. Sorry to hear it but thats a pretty long life to live for a dog. You have been fortunate to have her that long. Good luck

Our vet closed his office for a half hour to allow us complete privacy. Classy move

  • Sorry to hear, man. 14.5 years is a hell of a good run.

Bless you for saving an animal!

Sorry man. Dogs are awesome, but when its time its time. My dad was there for the last 2 dogs being put down and said its is a very peaceful process.

Hang in there and make these last couple of days as good for her as you can. It will mean a lot.

  • I had to put my dog down a month ago, she had lung cancer. Too early too, since she was 13 1/2 and chihuahua's can live to 20. Having to put your pet down sucks.

She's definitely got some beagle in her....cute little girl.

Sucks man, I remember my family dog (beagle) had to get put down the night before the MSU/UCLA tournament game a couple years ago. I was staying at my mom's at the time and had to watch his slow decline. Its absolutely awful.

I kept it together until the last day when he went outside and literally tried to slam himself into the ground and die. My mom asked me to go pick him up and bring him back in out of the cold. I did and I just started bawling profusely as soon as I picked him up. I'm tearing up typing it right now. He was such a good boy. Died right there in my arms on the way back in.

I wouldn't trade the heartache for the twelve years he was around, though. He was special just like most of them are. Good luck with it buddy!

Taking the dog to the vet. Not sure what happens afterward, but the vet assured it's quick and painless.

Thanks for the kind words. Death sucks but I know I'm doing the best thing for her. It's time.

  • Very sorry to hear my man. My thoughts go out to you and her. Sounds like you gave her a great life and she gave you a lot of joy for over 14 years.

Our dogs are a big part of our family, so this hits home.

This is very true. My mother has a beagle puppy who is awesome, but different than the older guy. Its fun to discuss with her differences and things we notice.

The first dog (Buddy) was a stray that we took in at about one year old. He had a few faults (would get loose, beg etc) but every conversation about him ends with "Even still....he was such a good dog."

Its a special thing to have to discuss with your family. I love thinking of funny/cute stories about him.

The telling sign was yesterday evening. I bought her some canned food that she has just devoured all through her life. It had meat and bacon in it, two things she always loved. She ate half of it, if that, and just didn't care for the rest. The day she stopped eating bacon.....

  • Sorry to hear, man. Mine went 14.5 then got seizures one night. Continued constantly for about 10 hours and we decided to put her down the next morning. She went from perfect to the opposite of. It sucks.

Be strong. I had a 'dog 10 commandments' thing that probably came out of some stupid chain mail thing, but it was incredibly true. If the roles were reversed, the dog would absolutely go with you and be there til the very end. Make sure you do the same for your girl.
