I'm sorry, John Stewart / Daily Show just isn't funny anymore

  • The Daily Show has jumped the shark.... not sure what it is, but John Stewart ust seems like he's trying way too hard, or the schtick just isn't funny anymore. Don't get me wrong - I love the way John Stewart highlights political hypocrisy and I love when he goes after other networks (not going to be specific and send this to Wells), but let's face it, the schtick just doesn't work anymore. My opinion, John Stewart needs to re-work the show and - I think - actually be a little more serious.

Colbert, on the other hand, is 1,000 times more entertaining. Sure, neither are strictly political shows, per se, but Daily Show is really lagging behind from an entertainment standpoint.

This is how I know you're not being serious. That and not spelling his name correctly.

While the DS will sometimes miss - its usually one of the top 5 smartest and funniest shows on TV.

  • I've been watching since Craig Kilborne was the host and I thought John Stewart improved the show and that it was great for years, love the call outs, exposing hypocrisy, etc., but John Stewart just seems like he's trying way too hard. Colbert is a thousand times better. I think, in part, it's natural to compare the two and we're seeing Colbert in his prime while Stewart is in a decline. Just not nearly as entertaining or funny as it used to be..

Politics can take its toll. I follow it like a sport but even then sometimes I just have to tune out.

There was a study recently released that showed how stupid his followers are...not just his followers, but the followers of just about all "news" shows. There were a series of questions asked to the followers that covered different subjects...every one of the shows' followers wasn't able to answer 3 out of 4 and 4 out of 5 questions for two of the different surveys.

Proof that people that watch his show are idiots...

Study Finds Fox News Viewers Least Informed Of All Viewers

Another study has concluded that people who only watch Fox News are less informed than all other news consumers. Researchers at Fairleigh Dickinson University updated a study they had conducted in late 2011.

  • I disagree with the op.. it's the only show I have to watch each day. Smart, great writing, relevant skits, interesting guests, great banter back and forth.

You have to remember that they develop the skits the day of the show; one rehearsal and then it's live. For comparison, try getting your message on your voicemail correct the first time and then realize how hard these guys have it, though you barely ever hear Jon flub his lines. Now compare that to saturday night live, which has a week to prepare, and they are hardly ever original or funny.l

Granted Stephen Colbert has gotten better over the years, but he is the same shtick throughout the entire show, which detracts from his ability to host a serious interview. On the contrary, Jon can get very serious and pose intelligent questions.

This is like saying michigan state football so good though we don't need to watch MSU basketball anymore. They are both excellent; enjoy them while they're around.

Huh? That article said his followers scored the 2nd highest behind only NPR listeners and higher than those that watch no news shows.

Um, you do realize that just because the Huffington Post reported on the study doesn't necessarily mean they performed the study, right?

  • Jon Stewart is desperately hoping for Romney to win the election. He has no material for his audience when a Dem is in office.

The Daily Show isn't a news show, they don't claim to be a news show. Stewart tells his viewers that The Daily Show should not be used as a news source.

I don't think so. Stewart has spent a lot of the past 3 years showing the misinformation and hypocrisy coming from a certain news organization.

And he's done this because he has nobody in office to make fun of. His schtick isn't rocket science to figure out.

I would't call John Stewart's approach schtick. He is the Mark Twain of our times, and his approach is genuine. To me it never gets old because the show is smart, funny, and points out hyprocisy as you mention.

Colbert, on the other hand is quintessential schtick... the BEST example of a schtick carried on for a long time that I have ever seen. Colbert is a genius too.

    Best hour in television.

    From your link:

"People who only listened to NPR or watched Sunday morning talk shows or "The Daily Show" did the best in the study."

The study basically shows that everyone is an idiot. People who watch the Daily Show are apparently among the most informed idiots. People who watch no news are less informed than people who watch everything but Fox News and MSNBC (international news only, if I'm reading correctly). So your post was either stupid or deliberately misleading.
