Long time lurker, first time poster (usually any thoughts I have are posted 20 times before I read a topic). Was getting ready for this game with my usual mocking of scUM fans when I saw an interesting stat on twitter: UM hasn't beat a top-10 MSU team at home since 1978.
One scUM fan, being stupid as they tend to be, confused this with the "first time both teams are ranked playing each other" stat. He quickly realized his mistake and started to backtrack claiming MSU hadn't beaten a top-10 scUM squad at home. I reminded him of the 85-86 season where MSU not only beat them at home as #7 but also in EL when they were #6. This did not go over well.
He claimed the stat was irrelevant because BOTH teams were not ranked. Although partially true (it is somewhat irrelevant), I wanted to do a little research on the subject. Here are my findings:
1) scUM hasn't even BEEN in the top 10 against MSU since 1994
2) MSU has played scUM NINE TIMES since that 1994 meeting as a top 10 team (2x2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2x2001, 2x2000, 1999).
Clearly their inferior program is at fault for not having two top-ranked teams matched up earlier. Perhaps this information will be useful as you antagonize scUM fans over the next few hours. Perhaps not, in which case....I've learned my lesson.
