Interesting article about college spies with a mention of MSU

  • I did the obligatory search and it came back with nothing so sorry if this has already been posted.

Sheds some light on why MSU decided to close their Dubai campus.

  • As a junior at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, Glenn Duffie Shriver studied at East China Normal University in Shanghai. After graduation, he fell in with Chinese agents, who paid him more than $70,000. At their request, he returned to the U.S. and applied for jobs in the State Department and the CIA. He was sentenced to four years in prison in January 2011 after pleading guilty to conspiring to provide national-defense information to intelligence officers of the People’s Republic of China.

That dude lived at the end of my parents street when he was arrested.

  • This was part of our security briefing at the DoD. Pretty much there are hundreds of thousands of foreign students hear on students Visa's and not all of them are here just to get an education. And many disappear once the Visa's expire. The biggest threat to the US is from the people that are here legally.

  • Some of this is karma. It's pretty well documented that John Hannah closely cooperated with the CIA during the Cold Way years, and MSU probably had operatives embedded within its programs overseas.

Yeah, I was going to mention that it's interesting/ironic since MSU had some big CIA ties in the 50s and 60s.

And honestly, major props to LAKS. With all that they put into the Dubai campus, it would be easy to say, "Well, there's no evidence that this company IS affiliated with the Iranian government." Instead, she took the route that if it can't be confirmed that they are NOT affiliated, then she didn't even want to take the chance. Definitely a smart move considering the prominence of our nuclear physics program.

  • With all the Chinese students here it wouldn't be that hard to sneak a few spies in, they would blend in just perfectly. Even If they were driving around campus in a Ferrari nobody would think twice about it.

It's been a while since I've been in school, but are the Chinese still going forth with that plan of theirs to infiltrate agents as TAs that pretend to have especially poor language and teaching skills in order to hinder the education of American kids?

well not all of your ta's were agent's but who know's some might have been. I think that if anything they would be using the student status as a cover for other intelligence gathering techniques, and not necessarily spying on people in East Lansing just staying here as cover.

This is true. Sorry, but if you're from the far east and can't speak an ounce of English, you should NOT be teaching. Nobody knows what the fuck they're saying.

  • I thought the whole point of being global was to break country and cultural barriers. So a few jackass governments are trying to steal shit, wouldn't the entire world be better off sharing and cooperating in research? I mean no shit that a country like Iran is trying to spy on us, its not like we've been at war in that area for the last decade.

  • There was a state law enacted in the mid- to late-80s requiring that TAs be able to pass an English proficiency test. I don't know if that law is still on the books or if the U is following it.

I remember this happening because the bill's sponsoring legislator had three kids at MSU at the time (with a fourth one coming) and they all complained about how difficult it was to understand their MTH 108 TAs. lol

  • I was struck by a few things in that article.

    1) How awesome of a president do we have in LAKS?
    2) Makes me feel a little better about the failed Dubai experiment. Propping it up could have potentially benefited Iran.
2a) ...and MSU has a great nuclear physics program
    3) Russian spy - 4/10. Not hot enough to get noticed, still hot enough to bang after a few vodkas.
    4) scUM got suckered lol
