Intersting OL Quote About OTs, Conway.

  • Hmmm... Skyler at LT, France at OG, Allen at OG an Conway at RT?

"Roushar was asked why Burkland was moved from the right side to the left side. “If Skyler were to really make strong growth and improvement, what could we do with Dan France? Well, one of the thoughts is, maybe we could slide him inside and get him some work at guard and see how he does there," Roushar said. "The other side of it is, when we looked at it, we just felt that Henry (Conway) is better-suited to stay on the right side. So I guess kind of looking at the competition, we wanted to have our four best tackles at two spots rather than three at one or slide Henry to the left.”

Pads, competition both on - LSJ Blogs: Hey, Joe

Where to begin? Friday night interviews with the head coach and both coordinators yielded a lot of Michigan State football information. OK, let's start with...

  • I'd like to see Allen, Fou, Skyler & Conway all out there together, but it sounds like that can't happen

  • To me, this is what really stood out: "we wanted to have our four best tackles at two spots rather than three at one or slide Henry to the left." Reading into that quote...are they saying Henry has the lead for the RT spot?

  • Really happy to see Conway playing. If I remember correctly last year there were questions as to whether or not he'd even be able to play again at all. His name seems to keep popping up this Spring which is very encouraging. When he's been able to play, everything I've heard is that he's just a beast on the field.

McDonald is the one guy who we can sharpie into a starting OL spot (obviously RG). Allen and Treadwell will both be battling for the LG and C spots. Jackson is the favorite at C. France at OG is interesting as well.

No. What he's saying is that France, Burkland, Fou, and Conway are the 4 best tackles. They want 2 on each side of the line (France/Burkland on the left, Fou/Conway on the Right). Burkland, Conway, and Fou were all Right tackles. Doesn't make sense to have 3 of your 4 best tackles on one side. They had to move one of the backups (Burkland or Conway) to the left side. They didn't want to move Conway to the left because he isn't as comfortable switching as Burkland is. Hence, Burkland moving to left tackle was the only real option.

(I think another reason Burkland moved is because he and Fou are the Best 2 tackles and are going to both be starting come August).

??? Burkland is the guy you can pencil in. By far the best OL on this team. Not naming him the starter on paper this spring is solely a function of his injury/recovery.

Bell with some good blocking in front of himdrool. He was really good last year with suspect blocking.

I agree. Plus Fou and France started a combined 25 games at tackle last year. The coaches can't just say "Thanks, now sit down for the guy who's only played 2.5 games in his career." Burkland will have to earn his starting spot in practice, and I speculate that he will.

I think Burkland starts as well. We don't know if he'll be the starting LT or RT. McDonald has 26 starts at RG, it's hard to see anyone taking that from him.

Yea. Both will start. But Burkland is the most talented OL we have from just even the little a action I saw of him last year.

  • How big is Allen now? I always thought of him being a smaller guy, fit for center.

  • Kinda rooting for France to move to LG and win that spot. We'd have a pretty massive OL like we did in 2007.

  • Just reading into last year France seemed to struggle at times holding down the edge just because of his size. He was exploited pretty bad in the Georgia game as I recall. Burkland might be. Better suited at guard.

I am all for a mean and nasty o-line. That pass happy offense they ran last year probably won't work with a new qb and all new Wrs.

The last 3-4 games, France put it together. Keep in mind, he made a major position change and made it fast. The last 3-4 games, he was pretty darn good. Which makes this all the better. Whoever wins the spots will have beaten out legit competition (knock on wood it's not because we lose guys in camp to injury).

Another thought about France- OG may be more along the mindset of DT than OT, so I am curious if he would take to that spot and become a physically imposing mauler.

Last season was the first time Burkland ever played RT as well...so his entire experience in HS was at LT and he said the other day he considers it his natural spot.

it's all falling into place finally. A dominant line w/ a stud RB to POUND GREEN POUND!! flex

  • Where is Klatt in all this. He is in Conway's class. High recruit and I heard healthy. Is he in the mix?

As long as they make room for McDonald at right guard. During the first half of last season, it looked like McDonald was the only guy on the offensive line that they could consistently run behind.

He's now permanently entrenched at the right guard position where he is currently third on the depth chart behind McDonald and Deyo. Just my opinion, but I believe Klatt breaking his leg really hindered his development and he has been playing catch up ever since. Unfortunately for him the talent from the following classes has gotten better, making it all the more difficult. At this point in his career he will be lucky to achieve a starting position as a senior.

That's either wishful or drunken reading. He basically said that a tackle was going to be moved right to left and they felt better moving Burkland than Conway.
