Is Abbey Road the best album ever? Discuss.

  • I will take the liberty of posting on the behalf of the other stoner rock enthusiast on this board when I suggest Kyuss's Welcome to Sky Valley or the self titled Clutch CD as the greatest "album" ever.

    Big John Studd

  • The Band. Certainly in any top ten discussion.

Revolver > White Album > Abbey Road

  • Who's Next is my Favorite...not saying that its the best.

The OP's question is way to subjective to actually answer.

  • London
    Calling

    Inglewood Jack

  • To satisfy the OP, however, I will make my list of best to worst Beatles Albums:

    1. Revolver
    2. White Album
    3. Rubber Soul
    4. Sgt. Pepper...
    5. Please Please Me
    6. Abby Road
    7. Hard Days Night
    8. Beatles For Sale
    9. Help
    10. Magical Mystery Tour
    11. Yellow Submarine (original release)
    12. With The Beatles

Honestly though they all have their moments and are all really good to great with the exception of 11/12 in my opinion. (I really don't like "With the Beatles" - All My Loving saves it from being total garbage)

Though the re-released soundtrack of Yellow Sub without Martin's orchestral stuff, and compilation of songs from other albums with the original songs for the movie is a really good compilation.

Magical Mystery Tour was basically an extension of the Sgt. Pepper sessions...I often consider it a "Bonus" Album.

I really like Help and the above 8...but I had to rank them. In honesty I probably could have gone 1-2-3-4-5a-5b-5c...10-11-12.

I almost included the two Past Masters compilation released later on the list. Basically they are compilations of released signals that didnt make albums. Some of them made international releases as well...I suggest picking them up if you don't have them...over even the later released Anthologies. Get the 12 above albums and the 2 past masters and you a very complete catalog of everything the Beatles actually released...as the Beatles...with the exception of a few Fan Club Christmas songs.

  • Not a fan of the Beatles so I'd say that Abbey Road is not the best ever.

    Among my favorites are:

Clash - The Clash (first album)
    Ramones - Rocket to Russia
Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
Dropkick Murphy's - The Meanest of Times

  • DSOTM, no contest

    Roger Waters

  • Abbey Road is the best Beatles album followed by Sgt Peppers and the White Album. Other all time greats are Who's Next, Born to Run, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Moondance, Blood on the Tracks and Songs in the Key of Life.

    MSchott

  • Three/six more albums better than Abbey Road.

    1. Radiohead - OK Computer (or the Bends)
    2. John Hiatt - Slow Turning (or Bring the Family)
    3. Steely Dan - Aja (or the Royal Scam)

  • Here's a vote for Paul's Boutique. Even before the death of MCA (RIP) I could listen to that from beginning to end over and over.

    Always Smooth.

    Jim Shorts

  • Rubber Soul and Help were both better albums

"I think the world is run by C students" Al Mcguire

  • Mine would look like this--for today anyway.

    2. Revolver--The Beatles
    3. Nevermind the Bollocks--Sex Pistols
    4. Rubber Soul--The Beatles
    5. Funhouse--The Stooges
    6. Exile on Mainstreet--The Stones
    7. Surfer Rosa---The Pixies
    8. Personality Crisis--The New York Dolls
    9. OK Computer--Radiohead
    10. London Calling---The Clash
    11. In the City---The Jam
    12. Mothership Connection--P-Funkadelic
    13. Velvet Underground---Velvet Underground

    My list..as of today anyway.

    1. Who's Next--The Who
    2. Revolver--The Beatles
    3. Nevermind the Bollocks--Sex Pistols
    4. Rubber Soul--The Beatles
    5. OK Computer--Radiohead
    6. Funhouse--The Stooges
    7. Exile on Mainstreet--The Stones
    8. Surfer Rosa---The Pixies
    9. OK Computer--Radiohead
    10.London Calling---The Clash
    10b. In the City---The Jam
    10c. Mothership Connection--P-Funkadelic
    10d Velvet Underground---Velvet Underground

I like your list a lot, but not as big a Radiohead fan! (You have OKComputer in there twice!)

I think I'd change the first one to The Who's Quadraphina and maybe move down some of the punk...not out, just down...I'm not as big a fan...and I'd be down with that playlist as my desert island list.

Liar. Nobody can listen to Maxwell's Silver Hammer all the way through.

This is not true. I enjoy Maxwell's Silver Hammer, but I have NEVER listened to Revolution #9 all the way through, though I have listened to the White Album hundreds of times.

The White Album is great, but I have to agree with the OP that, for me, Abby Road is the best Beatles album to put on and let play. That having been said, I don't think I would give it the GOAT label.

Thanks! Yeah, I noticed that. I edited it.

I'm really not a huge Radiohead fan, but I gotta give them their props on that CD. It was their masterpiece, IMHO anyway.

Who's Next is my favorite Album/CD/mp3. It was the very first album (vinyl) I ever bought. Won't Get Fooled Again is still my favorite song. So I will always list that CD as my favorite.

I agree, though, Quadrophenia is a GREAT choice, btw.

Who's Next is my number 1 as well...just everything works on that for me...which is quite the testiment considering it was born out of a failed concept album.

Quad is great too...but there are a few misses on it. (as most double albums do) It does contain my all time favorite Who song though: The Real Me.

  • Personally I don't see how any other records listed in this thread stack up to the White Album. "The Beatles," as it is originally called, has mystique (see Charlie Manson), superhuman range, strangeness, humor, and just by sheer number, a larger selection of great songs. It is also argued that Jay-Z's finest album is his track-for-track homage of the White Album (The Grey Album), and so if one album can bolster two separate careers that are in ***two entirely separate stratospheres,*** then one must accept that the White Album is one legendary fucking record.

In a world all its own.

In his defense, The Meanest of Times is a great album but not in the same league as most of the albums mentioned.

I don't disagree with your statement at all, but if OP's premise is an album you can simply put on and play at any time and just enjoy every track then I think Abby Road is a better choice.

    Experimentation too.

Not many rock bands slipped over to the side of Stockhausen, Cage, Vareze, Xenakis and Boulez.

Both are outstanding albums. Entwistle on The Real Me just kicks ass on bass. Moon and Daltry are on fire.
