Is Coach Perles still running the Pizza Bowl?

  • Or are the Ilitich's running the show? I talked to some folks who saw Perles a little while ago in Florida. I heard that George has to use a scooter to get around now he's gotten so big.

It's been taken over by rich Dutchmen from Kzoo.

Yep. Their plan is to move it to Fifth Third Ballpark. Look for the official announcement early next year.

  • Coach Perles is busy trying to figure out quicker and easier ways to get as much scotch as possible into his system.

    Lord Viceroy

  • Beginning next year, it will be played inside the Land Grant Trophy.

    Final Countdown

  • Sure a lot of hate for a former MSU player and the last coach to lead us to a Rose Bowl victory.

  • I heard him on Staudt the other day and he does seem to be involved with the bowl game. He might just be a figure head at this point but he is still involved with the game at least drumming up support for it.

So how was it? I had tickets but nobody could go down there for various reasons.

I was there. Exciting game and pretty good crowd. I was in the club seats though so it's always a good time there.

i know they were hoping for 50,000 plus but I could tell it did not look more than in the high 40's. Not sure why people feel the need to rip this bowl game. I have always had fun going and it is decent exposure for the state. They just need to settle on a time for the game and stick with it. I think 4:30 on the Tuesday after Christmas is to early. Most people are back to work after a long weekend.

Honestly, the people in charge need to actually try to boost its profile. Ford Field hosted a Super Bowl successfully. Other bowls are boosting payouts and getting better teams. The Pizza Bowl could at least become a mid-tier bowl if they actually try.

They basically have to boost their profile, because ESPN essentially sets the game time. They started at 4:30 because ESPN has another game at 8:00. If they want a prime time slot, they need to raise their profile. Same idea if they want a spot later in the week. The week is booked pretty solid, as I'm sure you've noticed.

Its not going to take much to surpass the Belk Bowl lol

I agree. Ford Field is a great venue for any football game. I actually liked the 4:30 slot. Allows plenty of time for bars before and after the game. On the other hand, I'm off all this week too.

If they keep getting good match ups like this one, they'll get the ratings and the profile will follow. It's a pretty successful bowl considering that it hasn't been around very long. The big ten tie in definitely helps them. One thing that's often overlooked in regards to the lower bowl games is the great individual performances you get to see. That WR from Western is something special.

The 3 games with B1G teams have been pretty good.

Next bowl contract cycle, I would like to see the Pizza Bowl increase its payout, move up in the B1G pecking order and get a Big East team. With the Big "East" about to cover the entire nation, it could be a good next step for the Pizza Bowl.

As for that WMU wide receiver, he put up those numbers with the human turnover Alex Calder throwing to him.

I'm going to disagree with the "good matchup" designation. Outside of the B1G, Purdue-WMU looks like more of the same crap we've had so far this bowl season. Even inside the B1G this matchup is pretty meh.

Did it turn out to be entertaining for those who watched: you bet, but the same could be said for LaLafayette vs San Diego St. And I'll never say that was a good marketable matchup.

...and yet it hasn't despite the fact that both bowls have been around for years (with different names when it comes to Belk). You and I would easily prefer the Pizza Bowl, but we are biased.

Sorry to the MAC fans out there, but that would be a big improvement from a national perspective.

Its because the LCPB has refused to up its payout to get better teams. Imagine a LCPB with a higher payout with B1G vs. Big East or ND. Or even the Big 12. Better matchup, more attention, bigger rating, more $$$$.

Its because a $750K payout isn't going to cut it.

  • This year's game was about the best the bowl could hope for, an in-state team vs a Big ten team. Unfortunately 4 years out of 5 they won't get a B10 team in the order they are. But even going to a Big East tie in might not help. Can't really see a ton of Cincy or Uconn fans making the trip.
