Ferndale is definitely a nicer place to live because of the amenities. Oak Park is just as safe, though.

To the OP Oak Park is iffy. I wouldn't call it dangerous but I wouldn't leave my doors unlocked either or go walking around at midnight. I would put it in the same category of Dearborn, Hazel Park, Southern Warren, maybe even Lansing. It is a working class area, It isn't the ghetto.

Highland Park or the East Side of Detroit. Check out the Warren and Alter area one day. I believe they tore down the Brewster Projects or I would tell you to drive by there. When I was younger I drove by and the area looked like a 3rd world country. Garbage everywhere, urban decay, it just looked bad (and no I am not talking about the people).

Look for the bodies dumped in a field on the east side. That's probably it.

Also, I drove through a neighborhood near Lonyo and I-94 a week ago. Half the houses were burned out, and it was a combination of Hispanic gangsters and women in burkas. Really creepy, and probably a dangerous place at night. Was like driving through a 3rd world slum.

Yep. Between 10 and 11 mile is the Berkley schools district and it's the same as Berkley, royal oak in terms of safety, school quality etc.. Move between 10 and 8 mile and things get a little more exciting.

I live in Oak Park, it is cool north of nine mile, in between 8 and 9 is questionable. The closer to ferndale or closer to berkley you are, it gets nicer. I'm never scared where I live, It's not dangerous but I would not live near the 8 mile and coolidge area. Detroit at 8 mile between coolidge and evergreen is kinda shitty.

I'd say by City Airport, Delray, Fairgounds, or Brightmore

I lived there for a year and it was fine. I would have preferred RO or ferndale, but oak park was cheaper and close by.

to duplicate what a lot of the other posters are saying, if you're in the 10-11 mile range, you're fine. not sure on amenities, but there's some nice neighborhoods and the schools, as long as theyre the berkely schools, are good. my mom grew up there.

Agree. Google Street view is the best way to see it without really seeing it...
