Is it just me or does it seem like Rexrode hates his job?

  • Often he puts little snippets in his columns about long travel, long days, and general inconveniences to his job. Doesn't seem super professional to me to be complaining about all the things he hates about his job into his articles. Comes across very childish to me.

Today for example " And now, two words a college beat writer dreads at the end of a long basketball season: Spring football. It starts Tuesday!"

I for one, think he has a pretty awesome job. While I imagine all the road traveling and stuff that comes along with it is not glamorous or particularly enjoyable, putting it in the stories almost seems like he's ungrateful.

Don't get me wrong, I love reading him and think he does a great job at covering the teams and giving us great insight.

I think Rex is just making fun of the often really strange lifestyle of a beat writer.

People tend to think it's a glamorous job. Rexrode points out that it isn't.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

  • He talks about it in his blog, not his articles. Big difference between the two. That said, show me a hot college sports reporting job and I'll show you a dude who's tired of fucking it.

  • He can complain all he wants.. Yes.. Works pretty much 24-7 from late Aug until the spring game, but he also lives in MI and has very little to do during the greatest time to live in the state.

Granted, I think that's his humor and he isn't complaining, but if he is, I will trade him jobs in a heartbeat.

Fair enough but to me still seems like sour grapes.

  • I see it an issue of Groundhog day. Most jobs have it. After a while most everything starts repeating itself.

  • How much do you think he makes in salary

  • Purely guessing here but $40-$45?

  • I talked to Joe at the spring game practice in 2010 and he said he was once offered the USC beat for football somewhere in Cali and declined. Pretty interesting...

  • I follow a number of sportswriters on Twitter. They all bitch about the same types of things, usually to each other. Sounds like a dream job, but the day to day grind is pretty tough.

Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub

  • It's the God-given right of any ink-stained wretch to complain about anything of his/her choosing. I can't back this up with data, but I suspect it's something in their DNA. Being miserable is when they're happiest.

  • Rexrode is awesome. He is a tremendous journalist who covers MSU.

Having said that, the trend of sport journalists "hating" on their subject matter has reached a point its become cliche. I'm not saying Rexrode is one of these guys, but there is a lot of them. I guess I don't understand why it seems to be in fashion for SPORTS journalists to belittle the subject they cover (whether it be recruiting or spring football).

  • He's MSU's best beat writer, and the best part is you don't have to pay a dime to read his material.

  • Rexrode is by far my favorite writer. His blog is very honest and he's very candid. We're very lucky to have him as MSU's beat writer.

    Ogie Ogilthorpe

  • terrible thread. in his BLOG he'll vent about late starts and the usual work-related aspects of what is an incredibly demanding job for probably not a whole lot of money.

But he also does his job amazingly well and gives just as much if not more time to acknowledge all the amazing places he gets to go and great experiences at big events.

But i'm sure you've never complained about your job before, right?

I'd have to think at least 50k. I'll go with $55,000 as a guess.

  • Rex is an absolute beast -- I have been around newspapers a long enough time to know that much.

People don't realize how overworked he is... Most of the papers I worked at in big college towns had a separate football/basketball beat reporter and sometimes one or two reporters depending on the sport. And usually a columnist that's pretty dedicated to the local teams.

Not only is Joe responsible for every daily MSU football/bball story, he also maintains the best MSU blog on the Internet, writes a weekly column, does a in-depth Sunday feature, hosts a weekly chat, etc. His output is insane and I'm sure he's among the most valued reporters at the LSJ. Plus, he can turn a phrase better than most.

And if he's not making 60-70K I'll eat my hat... journalists are poor but the best ones, like any other business, leverage their talent...

  • Joe is one of the best in the business. To be the best at anything requires a shit ton of effort. I don't blame the guy for feeling burnt out, the amount of writing he puts out is insane.
