Is it safe to buy a Saab?

I kinda like this new gen 9-5. Is it a safe choice? Am I going to be able to service it in the next few years? I'm a little surprised that Saab is still alive today, are they still on life support?

No! They are bankrupt. There are no franchised Saab dealers left. They aren't on life support. They're dead. There is a Chinese company still bidding for them, but it's a huge risk to take. It would be like buying a Daewoo.

Watch the BBC Top Gear "tribute" to Saab.
They built some interesting cars.
They just couldn't grasp any concept of accounting.

GM will continue any existing warranties on '09's and prior. '10' are basically still all GM parts (maybe '11's too) so you should be able to get parts. But the warranties on a '10' and thereafter are worthless. That being said, I've been eyeing a 2010 9-3 convertable, if I can talk down the price due to the warranty issue and Saab being gone, I may take the risk. They are nice cars.

Saabs are great cars and fun to drive but they are high $$$ mainenance. Word to the wise, keep the ignition console clean. If the car begins to stall/sputter it's likely due to a faulty (dirty) ignition switch.
PS Swedes are famous for their creative accounting and "cooking the books"

Leased 3 9-3 convertibles, 2000, 2004 and 2007 Aero. Saw drastic change from 1st to 2nd (GM influence) and further refinement to 3rd. That Aero was a sweet car with a 6 cylinder turbo and 6 spd manual, should have bought it. I would consider buying anything a 2008 or later, prices have dropped like a rock and quality got to be decent. Most parts are GM and should be available.

On Top Gear, they explained why this was not the case. The Saab engineers were tasked with using GM underpinnings and simply creating a unique vehicle using sheet metal, while keeping costs down. They failed miserably as Saab had an appetite for over building their cars to a fault. Safety was truly an obsession. Sad story really.

Saab had some great designs until recently it's really sad to see them out of business. I loved the 900 turbo convertible early 90s era (Jerry Seinfeld) had one. The later designs were awful

They did some revolutionary things, and some revolutionarily stupid things. The good things they came up with have been implemented by other manufacturers. But the other stuff they have done....man.
Will there be shops that can service them, sure. But its not worth it. For the same 40-50k range as a new 9-5, you could get....

I owned a new Saab 9-5 aero xwd. 2010 model. Awesome car. Same engine as the turbo Cadillac srx. However.... My 2010 was one of 500 built. I was rearended months after I got it and couldn't get parts. This was b4 they were bankrupt. Sad to say I got rid I it as soon as possible when I heard warranties would not be covered. Amazing car.... I now have a Buick regal GS. Very similar inside the cabin, just smaller. The GS is a great choice.

Big difference between Saab and Volvo with Chinese is when Ford owned Volvo they were given a decent budget to market in China. GM owned Saab and they were putting almost all their efforts in China with Buick.
Driving a new Saab in the US in the next few years would be like trying to find Peugeot parts now.

I've got the Regal GS as well. Handles like a dream in GS mode. The rims are a pain in the ass to keep clean. You have any tips? Gets a little old washing your car three times a week....
