Is this a new thing re: golf courses?

  • I'm inclined to believe if there is *A* way to make an extra few bucks, the course will do it. The OP's situation wouldn't surprise me.

  • I like how this has become "serious golfers walk" versus "hacks use a cart". Really?

"They don't have a caddie program but I usually get one of the assistant pros or even one of the bag room kids."

You get an assistant pro to caddie for you? WTF?

Sure. They love getting out of the pro shop and they have great reads on the greens.
FD has a new general manager. Hopefully I can convince him to get a better caddie program initiated.

I played a course last month that had mandatory caddies and no carts.

The course was designed to be walked. The longest hike is from the 9th green to the 10th tee. I've had caddies for various tournaments. They don't have a caddie program but I usually get one of the assistant pros or even one of the bag room kids. If you want to play more than twice, become a member.

That's true; there really are no super long walks that can't be handled. I've been forced to walk much worse in high school tournaments, etc.

I would love to become a member, but my living as a college student currently isn't exactly going to fit that bill. Plus, I'm not up north enough as well. You seem to have played quite a bit up there, are there any other courses you recommend around Forest Dunes?

  • depends on if it's hot or not. I usually like walking if it's under 80 degrees

There really isn't that much that's close. The Quest is a pretty nice and not expensive. I like The Tribute at the Otsego Club in Gaylord. The Fazio course at Treetops. Black Lake is fantastic but almost to the bridge.

I probably play Forest Dunes 25-30 times/season. Played with the club pro in the rain last Thursday. Nicest greens I've played anywhere.

I play Garland occasionally since I can play for free. They have dumped millions into the courses and facilities over the past 18 months so it's a lot nicer than it used to be. I don't really like any of the courses but it's a good place to go if you have 8, 12, 16 guys and just want to golf your brains out for a weekend. Park the car and never leave.

  • Most of the coarses down here you can't walk unless it's a par 3 coarse.

    TheIbleedgreen

  • it sucks carrying beer around walking, so riding is a much more practical choice

Not sure what courses you are playing at, but I have NEVAR seen anyone have a caddie at any course in my life. Not sure if I believe you.

You need to stop playing the $25.00 local muni's.

My caddie at Sage Valley also did The Masters the past 10 years.
Did Spyglass and Pebble Beach with caddies last October.
Caddies at Whistling Straits last summer.
Meadowbrook, Oakland Hill's, Forest Dunes, Kingsley Club, Red Run in the past year.
Any decent CC around the Detroit area has a caddie program.
