I'll never forget the off season when all of that steroid drama went down. He ended the season being "Pudgey" and came back looking like a toothpick. If that's not evidence I don't know what is.
Definitely helped turn our struggling franchise around.

Sure but lasting 21 years like he did, at that position... I'm not sure he used.

Yup. IIRC he was the first guy to come here and try to turn things around. Solid contributor for the tigs for years. Sad to see him out of the league.

He's right up there with Bench in my opinion. Hated him in Texas because he was so good. Loved him in Detroit for same reason. First ballot HOF.

He was also a catcher in his mid 30's by that time. That takes a huge toll. Next to Bench and Berra one of the best ever at his position.

Honestly even if you ignore how great of a hitter he was, he's probably a borderline HOFer if he had been merely average at the plate because of his incredible defense alone. We can debate all we want about the effect steroids had on his career but no one in their right mind would argue against Pudge being one of the top 10 catchers of all time and possibly top 3.

but didn't you see how much smaller he suddenly got one season?
I swear the only thing separating baseball from pro wrestling is makeup and spandex.

Had the opportunity to discuss this with Jack once...he told me whenver you ask Pudge about steroids he all of a sudden can't speak English . Hope you don't mind me sharing Jack!

He was the second one to sign. Fernado VIna was the first player to sign with the TIger's after the 2003 season. Vina was signed in Dec. '03, Pudge was in Feb. '04.

Yes, only a blind man would not have noticed. I don't know if he juiced or not but he was never a huge powerful guy, just flabby.

Pudge catching for 21 seasons is as remarkable as Moyer winning at 49.
I think he really wanted to play long enough to get to 3000 hits. Currently at 2844.
