I've spent $4300 at Costco in the last year.

why won't they build in lansing

I'm not sure but there is Sam's Club in Lake Lansing. My old roommates mom got it for him and we would go there to buy stuff for tailgates. I always forget this, but non members can buy beer and wine from Costo and Sam's Club in Michigan. It has something to do with liquor licenses.

  • If you buy gas there and have multiple vehicles in your household then it's actually easy to drop that much

  • Re CymJim:

Maybe your Costco is in a downmarket area. Mine has very high quality food, though not exotic stuff: fresh and well chosen produce, excellent meat, chicken, and fish, a respectable wine section...If you are looking for specialty stuff, specialty stores are better - not surprisingly. The toy section is small and no denim, but tables of good quality casual wear.
It's an enjoyable place to visit, as others have attested. No racial and class denigration is warranted.

Yeah, near Eastwood, and another in South Lansing on Edgewood. Wish one of them was a Costco instead.

  • Yes. For one thing, they treat their employees very good. Also, they make their profit on the membership fees--not on markups. Also, their house brand, Kirkland, for the most part is great. We make the 50 miles drive to Costco about once a month, and it's worth it. Their meat is very good (sirloin tips are a great deal), salmon in great--too many things we use every day to list.

Ive spent $5500 this year at Best Buy and I have gotten $100 dollars worth of free stuff.

You could have bought the exact same stuff from B&H, Amazon, or NewEgg and spent less than $5,000, not paid taxes, and have over $500 in your pocket. Not to mention better customer service and not be bugged once about buying an extended warranty.

  • I wonder what I spend at Sam's Club. Prolly $800 per month.

I would consider a switch to Cosco - but Sam's is more convenient. Locations everywhere.

Lately, I've been disappointed with "center aisle" Sam's products. All those shiny Chinese-made items - from grills, to wood flooring, to ski goggles. They're all junk. I mean JUNK. I tore out and returned my Sam's-Club-Special bamboo flooring and threw away "no fog" goggles that fogged up in 5 minutes.

So I stick to Sam's for food, cleaning/paper supplies, gasoline, and some of their clothing.

The only Kirkland product that I've bought and not been satisfied with are dryer sheets; everything else has been great.

For the poster that asked about Sam's vs Costco, it's like Costco is the Macy's of warehouse clubs and Sam's is still Walmart. You'll sometimes find things at Sam's you can't get at Costco, but it isn't worth having memberships at both places.

I continue to be confused about why there isn't a Costco in a market as big as greater Lansing. It must suck having to drive to Grand Rapids, Brighton or Flint.

Nothing screams "playa" quite like Mommy and Daddy buying you groceries.

2011 was $6,154 in the warehouse and $3,142 at Costco Gas. 2012 is already at $3,922 but a big chunk of that was a patio set.

I have a love/hate relationship with that place

I seriously doubt that. Anyway, a continuing part of the thread is that it's enjoyable to walk through Costco and see what they have out...things change from one visit to the next. If you know what you want (don't need to hold it or try it) and don't mind waiting for delivery, maybe online works as well. But unless you already know the product, you are buying at least partially blind.
I didn't know know Amazon, et al.offer great customer. What is it they do?

Accept returns without questions. Also, they don't try to sell you magazines at checkout. Also, remember, on $5,000, you pay $300 in taxes.

The only reason you're not paying taxes is because you're not declaring the purchase on your tax returns. According to the law, there's the same sales tax on online purchases as bricks and mortars purchases.

Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub

That's actually a solid purchase. I'm out of Qtips right now, and have forgotten to buy them twice in a row at the store. Not something I actually think to buy.

I'm chilling here with a tub of tzatziki and some hummus. Probably going to break open the 36 pack of toilet paper later. All paid for by the check I got back because I spend so much fucking money there.

I've spent about a zilly there in the last decade. I've basically eliminated shopping at grocery stress.

is Costco better than Sam's Club? My mom's had me on her Sam's Club membership for years now but i never buy anything there because when you do the math the savings are not substantial and I don't need a massive bottle of ketchup lol.
