Izzo: Hollis seeking waiver for Roe to dress and play on Sun

  • AASpartan said...

Dude would be rusty as hell. I have no idea if he's been playing pickup ball or whatever, but I've got to imagine he is nowhere near where he'd need to be to actually play something in crunch time. Probably would suit up so Izzo could bring him in at the end of the game and that's about it.

He has 5 fouls to use let him bang Sullinger into oblivion with them. He is probably the most healthy since his junior year of high school.

Is he still considered an amateur since he is getting paid as an actor? NCAA is weird, let a Can Newton be eligible all year long, but Roe, who is probably one of the most deserving Student Athletes out there will most likely be ruled ineligible.

Jeremy Bloom was able to have endorsements while skiing in the Olympics and still play WR at Colorado. I am sure Delvon will be fine.

Last thing you would want to do, is put the kid at risk for injury!

Somebody posted on scUM's rival board saying they saw him playing a game at the Mac in East Lansing over the weekend knocking down 3's against people. Said he scored a ton of points, but was running very gIngerly. Said his team won 110-37 and Roe was only playing at about 25% and did what he wanted. This was from a scUM poster.

Because his skiing endorsements were for skiing, not football.

  • Doesn't Izzo start all the seniors on Senior day anyway? Then they use a timeout after the first play or as soon as they get the ball back to get the starters on teh court? Roe would start the game, Green to Roe for a starting Alley Oop!

  • I guess I'm confused as to why he wouldn't be allowed. NCAA folks, fill me in on this. Is it because of his acting career? Do we still have a spot available on the roster or will it be an issue of having too many people on the team? Does he still have a scholarship or did he give that up when he retired? Still enrolled in school?

There are so many factors here. Anybody with info to answer the above questions would help to figure this thing out.

I'm wondering the same thing. Even if he lacks a scholarship as long as he's enrolled and retains amateur status, it seems like he'd be able to participate.

Wow, that would be absolutely incredible

It's the right thing to do. I don't see any reason why the NCAA wouldn't allow it.

  • The roof would come off!

I have no doubt he would come in at the end of the game....stop play....then kiss the S.

They don't want to risk another injury doing anything remotely physical.

That'd be a silly way to use your first timeout.. I imagine we'll see the normal starters and seniors get into the game at the end if there's enough breathing room.

  • I doubt very much if the NCAA would agree to let him COMPETE. But to suit up also violates things right now, without a waiver. Best I'm hoping for is allowing him to be IN UNIFORM. If they actually let him on the court, someone at the NCAA's head would blow off. Won't happen IMHO. But in uniform, with some guarantee that he will not play? Participate in the warmups, layup line? Sure. They might agree with that.

Tom Izzo said AD Mark Hollis was in contact with the NCAA yesterday about a possible "special pardon" to get Delvon Roe in uniform Sunday.

    Diamond Leung ‏ @diamond83

Izzo has said he would actually play Roe on Senior Day if the NCAA allows it. MSU still has a locker for him. We'll see what the NCAA does.

Do you know how much emotion would be in the building Sunday if yet another player from Ohio, a senior no doubt were to dress and play? It would be off the charts.

No one in the media has EXPLAINED WHY he's ineligible. But it's been pretty clearly stated in multiple articles that the acting money has caused him to be ineligible now. I don't understand it either. But it's been real clear. He's not eligible right now.

Something just occurred to me. It's a guess, I have no information. But did the movie gig cause him to set some academics aside, so that he's not "made progress towards a degree" up to NCAA standards? Drop some classes, Not full-time student? Something like that?

IMO this is the right thing to do. I would love for him to suit up and be part of the senior day fesitvities, but he is not on the roster and putting him into the game just opens up unncessary debate.

  • So serious question - assuming the asshats that run the NCAA poo poo any such proposals...

Is there any reason why MSU couldn't simply introduce him during a timeout? Let him go out on the court, receive some applause, kiss the floor, etc? Yes, it would not be as cool as actually being in the game, but it would give the kid his props.

Unless I'm missing something, he's ineligible because he's not on the roster. Same reason any other student is ineligible.

    Buzzer Beater

  • If he is currently on athletic scholarship but retired due to medical reasons, MSU is allowed to keep the scholly available for another player, right?
If this happened, there would be no way the NCAA would allow a medically DQ'd player to actually play.

That said he should definitely be allowed to don #10 on the bench and run out and kiss center court during one of the final TOs of the game

    Potato Cakes

  • Just like old times, Roe will come off the bench during player intros and yell "let's get this shit". Cannot wait.
