Izzo- This would be good year to play in 10 day International

I really like the idea. I also would consider having Delvon go with the team, but sit it out. I don't think he needs any extra wear and tear on his knees.

Probably a good idea. Have him there to provide leadership, since many of the young guys will be looking up to him.

Listen you closet M fan, I could care less if they beat us "twice" this year. The day Izzo starts replicating what Threeline does over in AA, is the day I will officially turn in my Spartan card. Apparently, yours is already turned in...

Wow. So this is pretty much considered a great idea by everyone. The players would get extra practice time and face some quality off-season opponents. The incoming players could gain experience and the team as a whole could gain some much needed chemistry.

Yet you think it's a bad idea just because uofm did it too and we would be "copying." Grow the F up.

  • It's not copying. This is commonplace. It used to happen all the time, but the NCAA regulated it to the point teams didn't want to wade through the red tape in the 90s. Duke brought it back to the fore a few years ago. It works best for young teams as vet-laden teams may have guys with USA Basketball, etc.

  • Even my D3 soccer team did a European tour where we traveled all around the Netherlands playing teams as part of our preseason. It was great for bonding, good experience, and a lot of fun. Definitely would be a good idea for the BBall team to do something with either a European or Canadian tour. Maybe stay away from Amsterdam though... that was an interesting practice the next day. smoke

  • Isn't there a rule as to how often you can do these trips? It's like every 4 years or something if I remember correctly. I'm not sure about that though.

Where did you go to school? A bunch of fraternity brothers of mine went to Europe on a soccer tour.

  • I bet Izzo's less concerned with building chemistry, (which a trip to a far destination might bring), and more worried about simply getting some practice time in before the UNC game. Are we going to be able to schedule any games that count, against respectable competition, before 11/11? Our first game that counted this year was 11/12, and we had two exhibitions before that.

lol critical thinking skills. find them.

  • This thread is great.

-Izzo says he is thinking of taking the kids on a summer camp tour for extra practice and some bonding.
-People start a joking about a playing on the Moon, Beastie Boys and SpaceJam
-Hitch thinks that people are supporting this because of the Fab5
-People correct Hitch that Michigan did it this summer
-Hitch then tries saying that we are copying Michigan
-People correct Hitch again that many teams do this
-Hitch throws a hissy fit and flips out on everyone and says he will turn in his Spartan card because Izzo is blatantly copying Beilein, while telling everyone they aren't Spartans because they support the extra practice and team bonding.

I'll come back to check on Hitch's reasoning skills later on.

    Why is "twice" in quotations?

Also, wouldn't it be cool to go play some of the teams with former Spartans on them? Play against Suton or Neitzel or Raymar. That'd be sweet

They should be going to Europe.

Besides the fact that 10 days of NCAA allowed extra practice is 10 days of NCAA allowed extra practice and for a team with as much youth as we're going to have that extra practice is a godsend...besides that though, I think Calipari explains why Canada might be the more ideal destination than Europe.

With a rookie-laden lineup, Calipari brought his team across an international border because such a trip afforded him 10 additional days of practice under NCAA guidelines.

“We just got a lot of work done,” Calipari said after his team defeated the Lancers 95-62 and 104-75.

“It was an easy trip for us. I’d recommend this to anybody. Why would I want to go to Spain or Greece now and get beat by 100 by their national team?

This isn't about challenging our guys as much as possible. It's about building chemistry, building confidence and seeing who's where on their developmental curves so summer workouts can be accurately tailored for each player.

Izzo's Spartans could be coming to Windsor

The Michigan State Spartans could be headed to Windsor this summer for a couple of exhibition men’s

  • Getting a early start on building team chemistry and developing players is a smart move, regardless of who has done it in the past. Look back at the 04 Pistons. They practiced together for most of the summer, and that helped them greatly, enough to get a NBA championship.

  • For those saying it's copying scUM, MSU has already done a tour like this several years back. Teams are allowed to do this every so often, and I think it will greatly help the team.

  • I'm disappointed that this idea seemed to lose momentum after Izzo made that statement. It would've been great for such a young and new team. I wonder what happened?

Public discussion of it has lost momentum. I haven't seen that it's been ruled out. It's only June 6. Might sill be in progress,

Agreed. Daily statements of "We're working on it..." or "We're still working on it..." would let us know that momentum wasn't lost.
