Izzo overcoaches at the end of halves...

  • Vim said...

I think he called a timeout because Payne was awkwardly bringing the ball up court. If you let that play out and we don't get a bucket, or we turn it over, everyone would be ragging on Izzo for not using the timeout.

Did you see Valentine and Harris down the court though? There's no way in hell LeVert stops them, and they were all right in front of Izzo. Sometimes you just have to trust your players to make a play, especially in a situation like that. If there were 10 seconds left, that's a different story, but 5 seconds is not enough time to call a very good play unless there's a complete defensive breakdown.

I love Izzo, but his plays out of timeouts have been a problem since like 2006, especially at the end of halves. I would love to see the stats on our plays out of TO's... it can't be pretty. We rarely score when we call that stupid TO with 15 seconds left in the first half. Sometimes it worked when Kalin was here because he could beat pretty much anyone 1-on-1, but we still didn't convert a very high percentage of those plays.

Sometimes you just have to let the kids play. I don't know how you can't see this one was a mistake. 4 players are focused on Payne, while LeVert is guarding both Valentine and Harris by the 3 point line. We had an easy transition basket for the win.

The last time I really remember it working regularly was when Cleaves was still playing. I still call it the Mateen Cleaves jump stop timeout.

  • We lost a similar game in Ann Arbor several years ago when he called timeout just before a wide open (made) three. I truly wish someone would look at our historic performance in close and late situations after a to. There was a time it seemed to be a plus, but the last 5-8 years, it seems like we are taken out of things more than we get in them.
The Indiana game was a disaster, this was a disaster.

  • When was the last time we had a good play out of a timeout? It's been fucking horrible.

Sometimes you make mistakes and over-coach. We all love Izzo and know he's a great coach but today he made some mistakes. If we win, nobody talks about it, but we lost so let the 2nd guessing begin.

I thought it was a mistake as soon as he called it, not after Harris turned it over. In fact, I texted another RCMBer "Why a timeout? Jesus."

  • Would some with a Dvr make a gif or clip of when Payne got the rebound and drove it?

EXACTLY. /thread. Payne is great but there was a lot of potential for mistakes with him driving the ball up the court. would have called it as soon as he came down with the rebound to have 7 seconds left but it was more the execution of whatever happened between Appling and Harris that was the real issue with the timeout.

Why the hell call that timeout at the end? Valentine and Harris had a 2-on-1 on LeVert, and Izzo calls the timeout and a crappy play out of it. Keeps happening over and over again at the end of both halves.

Completely agree. Calling a TO on a break?

Agree 100%. You want to attack off transition, you don't want to allow MSU to inbound again and let UM reset their defense out of bounds and waste time.

Harris was supposed to take the shot, but the screens didn't get him open. He panicked and threw it away. He probably should've taken the contested 3-pointer, but that's just hindsight. Questioning Izzo's timeout isn't hindsight... I thought it was a bad idea as soon as he did it.

  • I wasn't irate about the timeout, but the play that was set up was awful. You set up a high ball screen (which they had been over hedging on all day) with Nix setting the screen. That either leads to Harris shooting a 3 with a big on him or Nix possibly getting the ball 20 feet from the basket. If you run that play you have to have guy that can pick and pop. Seems like we might have a big that can hit a jumper. Payne is his name I believe. But instead it seems more important that Payne is available to offensive rebound even though the play that was run would have left time for that maybe 1-20 times.

Especially a break like THAT one. Four of their players were looking at Payne behind halfcourt, and only one of them realized that Harris and Valentine were down the court.

Reminds me of when MoJo hit a 3 against um at the end right after Izzo called a TO

  • Last year, I went through the play-by-plays from 2011-2012 to see what our efficiency was when calling a timeout in the last minute of the first half. Unsurprisingly, it was atrocious, especially for a team that was very efficient otherwise. I can't find the exact results, but we were scoring way less than 1 ppp--like somewhere around .5-.7 ppp.

I know that is a small sample size, but at some point, MSU needs to reevaluate this strategy if results don't improve.

  • This one was on Izzo..but Nix and Appling missing free throws down the stretch didn't help either...

Yeah, I think if Appling had the ball,, maybe he doesn't call a TO. He may of been worried with Payne dribbling the ball up court.

I was expecting the worst to happen ... mostly a steal by Burke. Payne made a great play to kick it over to Valentine but that was just after Izzo called the timeout.

Was he supposed to shoot it? Probably. But he didn't take the screen Nix set him for some reason and went the opposite direction. But I want to know what was the call after the rebound. Was Payne supposed to push it up? Should he have given it to Appling and let him make a decision? Then maybe Izzo doesn't take the TO? Don't know. Either way, we looked like a monkey fucking a football on the final play call, and that's on Izzo.

RIght, but that should be planned for since you know UM is going to key in on Harris/Appling. Don't they normally have a 2nd option on a play?

This is just something we get with Izzo. He saves his timeouts for the end of a game, and uses them because he thinks he can draw something up to give his team the best possible chance to win. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. If he had a coach on the floor (a Mateen, a Draymond) I think he lets that play out.

There's always a second option, but 5 seconds doesn't give you much time to get to that 2nd option. Harris looked panicked once he realized he wasn't even close to open.

  • Guys, I also would have to say that what cost us the game more was the lazy turnover by Appling when we had the ball with the shot clock off. We had total control of the game at that point and blew it epically.

If there was a second option, it wasn't Payne, Nix, or Valentine ... they were standing around watching. Harris went in the opposite direction of the screen and thought he was doing to get a good look, but it closed up and he panicked (as arfabe16 said).

  • Izzo NEVER calls a stem-the-tide timeout, so he can save them for the end. He should have learned with this not-very-smart group by now that these late-game strategems ARE NOT WORKING.

I can't say I blame him terribly for calling timeout when Payne was dribbling, but we had numbers and a break-out situation for like the second time in the game.
