Izzo wants to be waterboy for Olympic team

  • Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, right, shares a moment with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski after their game in November.
Make no mistake about it, Michigan State's Tom Izzo would love the opportunity to coach the U.S. men's basketball team in the Olympics.

He's just not sure he'll get the call, figuring chairman Jerry Colangelo would opt for an NBA coach to replace Mike Krzyzewski after this summer's Olympic Games in London.

Krzyzewski recently announced this would be his last stint as head coach.

"I think they'll go with a pro guy," Izzo told The Huge Show's Bill Simonson on Thursday. "I could see a guy like (San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg) Popovich doing it. I really think a guy like Doc Rivers would be a great guy for that.

"There's so many good coaches that deserve a chance to coach."

Izzo does have some international experience, serving as the head coach of the 2003 U.S. team that won a bronze medal in the Pan Am Games. He also was an assistant on the 2001 Goodwill Games team that won gold.

"I've said this and I mean it: I'd be a water boy on the Olympic team," Izzo said. "It's just one of the dreams I've had. It wasn't to be the head coach, it was to be part of the Olympics."

Izzo said San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and Boston's Doc Rivers are deserving candidates, but if the call comes, he'd to be part of the Olympics.

  • Clearly you have never watched the water boy. Adam sandler dominates that game.

Clearly you don't know Tom Izzo's storyline. He won't dominate the play, but he will hit a crucial free-throw at the end of the gold medal game to seal the win.

  • If that is what he wants to do, good for him

  • I would feel the same way. The experience of being in the Olympics, walking during the opening ceremonies, and representing your county would be one of the coolest things you could do.

  • I could see Izzo feeling this way during the Dream Team era, but the players today don't even give a shit. Playing in the Olympics is more of an inconvenience, and they want to be paid for it.

  • Izzo will likely be on the staff one way or another.
