Jay Paterno

  • Boy did he come off as a douche on ESPN today, just saw the interview.

Called the matter little, and almost said the scandal would pass when it comes to his Dad's legacy, but caught himself barely.

I wish they would have asked him if he knew what was going on with Sandusky while coaching for his Dad, bet he would have said no, but that would have been a lie. He knew.

  • I thought it oddly inhuman that he kept referring to his father as "Joe Paterno" and not "my father" or "dad". Almost like he was JoePa's lawyer. That whole interview was off-putting, strange stuff.

  • I wonder if it would be effective to anally rape these guys who try to downplay the seriousness of what happened... Maybe that would give them the appropriate perspective

I thought that was odd as well, but the entire thing was that stiff of an interview, it could have been done to deflect attention from the Paterno family since they have to deal with it. Who knows.

    Joe Pa got off easy.

  • Jay Paterno needs to shut up and quit mugging it up for the cameras every chance he gets. The evidence is overwhelming against his dad - accept it, admit that his father had his faults, and offer an apology on behalf of the Paterno family to the victims and their families. I know that attention-whoring douche won't do it, but that would be the decent thing to do.

This seems like a healthy, proportionate response.

  • Hang on, he wants you to wait until ALL the facts come out before you call him a douche.

Wait wait, I have a better one.

Him being a total douche in that interview is just one chapter in an increasingly long lineage of douches.

Can you blame the guy? Here he thought he'd skate though life because he has the last name Paterno. Now his life is a fucked as one of Sandusky's victims because his last name is Paterno.

  • I wanted to punch that casual; indifferent look off of his smug face. It was this sort of attitude and aloofness among several friends and administrators at PSU that allowed innocent children to be continually victimized by this serial pedophile. Many times, children shouldn't pay for the "Sins of the Father" but in this, I wouldn't mind if he did.

  • His CBS Evening News interview was wacky. Jay was still in denial.

I did not see the interview. Just based on the family statement, they are all in denial. They were more concerned about Penn State's reputation than a scandal. Sad!

  • I saw a Jay Paterno interview several months ago (maybe after Joe's death?) and thought it was weird. He referred to his dad as Joe Paterno in that one as well.

    TheChosenOne30

  • I used to love Joe Pa. Knowingly aiding and abetting pedophiles is beyond the pale, fuck that guy. It's too bad he's dead, he deserves to answer for his role in all of this.

  • It's almost like he's ignoring all of the emails that show his dad's role in this. Freeh had unprecedented access to PSU files and email. The fact that Jay is ignoring this proves he's trying to bury his head in the sand.

    sprtnbrn

  • Matt Millen was also interviewed.

Referred to Joe's actions as a "big mistake".

Wow So much denial going on

    Very sad

  • Some people think crushing that football program is going too far; eff that. If any fanbase (including ours) were to worship its team like PSU, it allows admin, coaches, etc to have too much institutional control. Make this program suffer and then there won't be anything to worship.

    Old Man Brody

  • Sadly, all the Joe Paterno apologists continue to have their heads buried in the sand on this.

  • It's understandable that his kids would want to defend their Dad, but engaging in a PR campaign like this reeks of an effort to salvage the money his name and likeness brings in for them. Those cute Joe Pa masks and tshirts his estate gets a cut off probably aren't exactly flying off the shelves...

    Fletch

  • He should have consulted a public relations firm. At least they didn't let the other Paterno son speak.

    Spartytruth

  • It is very strange to hear him call his father, Joe.

The guy is a doucher. Honestly, I couldn't go on TV and defend my father if he did what JoePa did. I would be embarrassed and ashamed beyond belief.

I'm really sick of hearing PSU fans saying, "JoePa didn't DO anything" That's the problem, he didn't do a DAMN THING and let it continue.

As soon as I heard about this incident, I'm going to the police. End of story.

JoePa did a TON of GREAT things for PSU, but this whole issue wipes it away.

  • Like many dictators Joepa meant well but absolute power corrupts absolutely. The ego to believe that you know everything and can control everything for everyone's best interest is the ultimate flaw in Joepa.

    His ego was his undoing.

    Spartytruth

  • I met Jay Paterno about 20 years ago at a Party, he was a douche. Apparently my friends who went to College with him said the same. Seeing him now confirms this.

Any PR person would tell him to call JoPa "dad" or "my father" because it humanizes JoPa that much more.

He also should stop being so combative. How hard would it be to say, "our father clearly made some mistakes and I'm sure, in hindsight, he would regret the decisions he made at the time. This is a horrible tragedy and our prayers are with the victims and the families. We understand that his lapse of judgment tarnished our father's legacy and the reputation of the school he loved. We can only hope, in time, people also remember all of the good he did for Penn State."

That would have been perfect and acceptable. I can't imagine why he thinks he needs to continue to fight and argue about this.
