Jerrell- 2nd round?

  • I dont pay a whole lot of attention to NFL pay scales, So here's my question?

Did it cost Jerrell $$ by failing to get drafted in the 1st round ? Who knows if sticking around another year would have raised his stock.

So who goes in rounds 2-3 tonite? KC ? BJ ? Sonntagg ?

  • Titus Young was picked #44 last year and signed a 4 year, $4.56 million contract, completely guaranteed.

He'd be making $0 this year if he stayed in and I doubt that he could have raised his stock enough to offset the $0 income this year.

Also, he's taking a huge risk by staying in school. If he gets injured, his draft stock falls below where's at now immediately and potentially falls to the point of not having a career.

    Well said.

NFL GM said yesterday that the top 80 players are considered guys that can come in and start.

In the new rookie wage system, there are actually rewards for going in the second round. And it's been talked about in the agent community for several weeks now. The difference between being taken in the late 20s, versus, say, going 34th, is roughly $300,000 a year. However, first-round contracts are for five years. Second-round picks are signed for four years. So, for roughly $1.2 million cumulatively, a young player in his prime gets to hit the market a year sooner.

Basically if you're not a top 25 pick, you're looking to make your $ on the 2nd contract since the bonus is the only portion of any contract that's guaranteed.

I read the same thing. It's every players dream to go in the first round but could work out better in the long run, for Jerel, to go early tonight. If he plays at a high level, his next contract could come earlier with a bigger payday.

Yep...the math says he wins the financial equation of going pro and making $$ this year vs playing for $0 this season.

If the experts are correct, yes...but lots of talk today about him having a weak arm and that smarts will only take you so far with that arm.

Shows what I know...I thought he had a great arm.

Interesting. Although I wonder how many of those first rounders actually see the end of that first contract. I would guess that a pretty good chunk of them don't. If they play at a hih level they'll probably renegotiate/extend the contract. If they suck theyll get cut before the end of it.
