Job Offer in Sydney

  • do toilets clog more or less b/c water runs in the opposite direction?

I bought some batteries, but they weren't included... so I had to buy them again. What do batteries run on?

I was there for 5 weeks. Was a great time. The city is awesome and I loved it. I actually was the the Uni (get used to that) for some time and it is really a beautiful place.

Positives -Beautiful place -Reminds me of Michigan is a certain extent actually, kinda -People are very nice -Currency rate much better -Great transportation -Great food (Kangaroo is awesome) -Very practical. For instance, prostitution was a problem so instead of making the streets a police state at night (americans solution) they REGULATED IT through the government and now its safer to have sex with a prostitute then it is a regular person. -Harbor is amazing -Bars open till 4am if not all night

Negatives -Very dry -People hate America (yet thats all they watch on TV, hope you like 2 and a half men) -Crazy expensive. Whatever it costs here times by 2.5 Cheapest case of beer is $35.00 American. -I did not think the women were hot. I am young and right out of State so that might be why, could be spoiled. They are in great shape though, you will not see a fat person in Australia. -Lot's of Asians, like half the people. I feel racists for putting this in the negative. -Seriously though, it costs allot. That part sucked. -Banana's cost $17 a pound -You will be on the late shift of tRCMB -No more Spartan Sports.

EDIT: Also, great thing about Sydney is the beach's around the area are amazing. Head over to Bondi Beach and enjoy. If you feel comfortable being on the other side of the world I would do it, if you are not sure you want to be that far from home then don't. It's an amazing place though.

This is a pretty good summary right here. It is a bit expensive, but no more so than any major city such as New York or LA in the US.

Bottom line is you should definitely do it. I studied abroad at the University of New South Wales which is about 15 minutes outside Sydney and it was the best 5 months of my life. You'll probably want to live in the city, but if you don't mind a 15 minute trip on public transportation you can live right on the beach. If you do go make sure you take a trip over to New Zealand.

  • I've traveled around the world quite a bit, and get asked occasionally what international city I'd most like to live in. Sydney is #1 on my list.

The people are great. Plenty of "city living" things to do, but if you want to get away, the area beaches and surrounding Blue Mountains for hiking, biking, etc. are just a short distance away.

As someone mentioned earlier, it's expensive. But if you are living there, as opposed to being a tourist, I would expect that your compensation would reflect the cost of living.

And the flight over the Pacific is brutal, so hopping back to the States for a visit isn't the easiest.

  • You have to do it, so what if things are a little expensive, prostitution is legal, supplement your income.

  • Sydney is the bomb. It's expensive, but there is a ton to do and the public transit (if that's your flavor) is pretty good. Do it now.

  • The wildlife is amazing:

Great white sharks, salt water crocodiles, deadly jelly fish, spiders the size of ceiling fans and snakes....lots and lots of deadly snakes.

    The people are interesting too:

They hate Americans, and will start fights with you over nothing other than your nationality. Don't worry though, if you choose not to participate, you can just stand there as a bunch of Aussies bludgeon you...and they WILL bludgeon you!

    Unique culture:

Founded as a penal colony. Crocodile Dundee. Steve "Crikey" Irwin. Blooming onions.

Just tell em you're Canadian. They love Canadians.

As far as the expensive thing, last price that I heard from some Aussies was that a slab of beer (a case) was around $45. But I don't remember beers being incredibly overpriced at the bars / pubs.

No one really loves Canadians. They're kinda like a designated driver that you wouldn't otherwise hang out with, and by the end of the night, you realize cab fare would have been a bargain.

If you go, take some books. They don't have any books over there. Same goes for all culture of any note.

I just received a job offer in Sydney, Australia, three year postdoc at the University of Sydney. I am most likely going to accept the offer but this is obviously a huge move for me. Has anyone here ever lived in Australia or elsewhere outside the US? Any advice, suggestions, thoughts on living in Sydney or overseas in general would be appreciated.

I think the most important question for you is the job offer, not the location.

To clarify, Sydney is wonderful - have visited there, not lived there. Sounds like a great opportunity and by sights and the locals a great place to live. If the job offer pays living there it's a no brainer. So it comes down to is this work you want to do?

You are in a sweet spot. Good luck wherever you land.

Fuckin take it! Of course you are probably really really nervous about moving that far away from home but the upside is INSANE. Its been forever since I've been to Sydney but I had a blast while there (it would be a dream to actually live there).

The women are far superior to American women as well.

    Good luck

Do it. Living outside of the U.S. for a period of time is a great experience, and WAY different than just visiting. It will change your view of the world. You should even be able to get over the language barrier. wink_msu If the job is tolerable, then this would be a tremendous opportunity. Overseas experience looks great on a resume.
