Penn State's Joe Paterno is gravely ill, reports say

Legendary former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is gravely ill and his family is rushing to State College to be by his side, according to published reports

    Photo Caption

In this photo taken Jan. 12, 2012, former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno gestures as while interviewed at his home in State College, Pa. In his first public comments since being fired two months ago, Paterno told The Washington Post he "didn't know which way to go" after an assistant coach came to him in 2002 saying he had seen retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abusing a boy. I'm no expert, but that photo doesn't look current. sarcasm

When Paterno is alerted by McCreary, he goes to the AD and VP who oversees the PSU cops. Seems like the VP & AD, as the higher authorities, are the ones who should have been honchoing an investigation. If the PSU cops were alerted, and the State College cops already knew, what else is Paterno supposed to do, investigate himself? Call the cops on a daily basis and tell them to do their jobs?

"Call the cops on a daily basis" is a strawman.

Following up with them to see how and if they were addressing the issue seems reasonable. Yes?

It's not like Paterno was some work study junior. He was one of the highest level employees at the university and had more pull there than anyone!

Do you think Dantonio or Izzo would have handled it the same way Paterno did?

    Nope!

  • You guys are fucking vicious. Paterno made mistakes, was held accountable for them in full public view, had his previously untouchable legacy severely tarnished and was unceremoniously fired from a position he held for 46 years. Now he's dying. Should we rejoice, heap more shit on him, go over the the hospital and empty his bedpan on his face? Let the man die in peace and show some respect for his family.

  • Prior to the Sandusky thing I had a world of respect for Paterno. Now I'm completely indifferent to this news. Paterno and the admin were more concerned with win records and his legacy than they were doing the right thing and making sure Sandusky was investigated properly after the 2002 incident. Ironically that thinking destroyed his legacy. If they did the right back then it wouldn't have.

Just dont think this is the time and place to talk about Sandusky. Best wishes for JoePa and his family.

  • I like how the most powerful figure in the PSU football program is given a pass by some idiots for a cover up that was intended to spare the PSU football program of scandal. Why there is no way the sainted JoePa could be involved in such dealings. Children were being raped by his friend. Eyewitnesses reported it to him. His pal Sandusky had access to the football program up to the last week of Paterno's tenure. How anyone could try and absolve him of a prominent role in this is an act of profound ignorance. Whatever happens to his legacy is not a "shame". He deserves every bit of what is heaped on him.

Not wishing for his death, but am really sick of the way so many fanboys are trying to elevate him above the child rape that he enabled. His obituary should include that he enabled the rape of children for more than a decade.

Why don't you tell the children who were raped by a predator that he harbored and protected that now is not the time.

    "Best wishes for JoePa" confused

    Best wishes? He's dying.

I feel for his family. It is tough to lose a loved one.

But he put them through this. He did the barest of minimums above and beyond turning a blind eye to it. He is reaping what he has sown.

  • Very sad situation. It's unfortunate that the end of his career had to end like this. Now it appears he is near the end. Hats off to Joe Pa. Despite the unfortunate circumstance of late, he did a lot of good things. We're going to really miss Joe Pa.

    Sprtan4Ever

  • Bottom line: families and friends have gathered because Paterno wanted to say 'final goodbyes'.

I have a feeling by this time tomorrow, he won't be with us anymore.

The whole situation is sad. Paterno made mistakes, lost the thing that probably gave him purpose most of all- his career, which should be one of the most celebrated things in existence but is now tarnished beyond foreseeable repair, because of his mistakes. Not saying he shouldn't have been fired, but just sad.

C'mon. No one is absolving him in this situation. He could have done more but we don't know the whole story or any of the subtleties of the situation. Saying he enabled the rapes is very harsh and to even make this a talking point at this particular time is classless.

  • classless? Subtleties? Regardless of the investigation and even laughably assuming he wasn't part of the cover up. At the very LEAST if someone tells you they saw a guy rape a child you take away his keys to the building. The fact that Sandusky was still using the football facility tells you every thing you need to know about Paterno. He is partly responsible for every crime he could have stopped and didn't. FUCK HIM

Meh. I'm as sicked by the PSU Pedo situation as anyone. And it's frustrating that someone with knowledge of the situation had the information AND power to stop it and didn't, but you are going too far. His crime is negligence, and to me that is not a mortal sin.

    Agreed. Nice catholic play there
