We have this curious habit of turning our dead into saints. Like all of the sudden you have to forget about all of their transgressions and cannot criticize anything they have done. I understand where it comes from, but it's misguided. It's not callous or disrespectful to remember the bad and the good. It's not a condemnation to point at things as an example of how not to live.
Would you rather your kids hear: "(Cobain/Hendrix/Monroe/Paterno/etc.) are legends and icons. Aspire to be like them." or "This person had so much talent and potential, appreciate the good things they did, but understand it will always be tarnished. That's why they are tragic heroes."
If your kids are UMaa fans, define "tragic hero" so they don't embarrass themselves in public. Then explain that they'll never reach their potential if they stay on the path they have chosen.

Let's be honest here.....
The boys Sandusky chose were ones who would have otherwise been orphans with terrible quality of life. Its not like he was plucking these kids from East Coast Prep schools. There is an argument to be made that he was actually helping them out.
