That game, and the season that followed, was the single most heart-breaking and frustrating experience I have had as an MSU fan. I can imagine this is the case for a lot of people.

Looking back on 2006 is hilarious now that things have dramatically improved at MSU. Like being down 38-3 to Northwestern and somehow ending up winning. lol

I'm happy for JLS, but I must say I'm always kind of surprised at the amount of love he seems to get on here.

Besides the BW 2002 season, there was nothing more painful in my sports life than the JLS MSU era.

IMO Slappy was a good guy. He was in over his head, had a sick wife and had clowns like Turd Ferguson hurting his cause from the start. Still feel he improved things for Coach D compared to what he inherited.

Hope he has a good year.

Posting member of tRCMB since 1997. It is ALWAYS a great day to be a Spartan!!!!

    You misread his post, dude.

He said, if JLS had not lost his mind and [instead] continued to hand the ball off to JC we would have dominated.

Now I'm not one to question a coaching genius and someone who could light up a room with a smile and endearing antics so I think Fishrose is dead wrong on this one and want his Spartan card for crossing a legendarily nice fella like JLS but some may argue he is correct (they too should turn in their Spartan card for questioning epically friendly John "Mr. Turnaround" Smith).

Never mind, it isn't worth it.

I don't think he was "over his head" at all, he just wasn't the right coach (fit) at that time for the program. The personnel he had just didn't fit what he was trying to do nor was his style a fit for the conference ala rr. It doesn't work in the B10

Jets will use Tim Tebow on the punt team | ProFootballTalk

When the Jets acquired Tim Tebow from Denver, one of the suggestions of ways to use him was to have him play on the punt team as the personal protector. It seems that the Jets are following through on that suggestion.

Leave it to Rexrode to be level-headed:

"Since YouTube clips of some of his fabled MSU moments are now flying around, I'll reiterate what I've said many times about his tenure at MSU: He took a program in absolute disarray after three years of Bobby Williams and did some things to improve it. He nearly broke through a few times -- but didn't, and that's ultimately on him. Still, a pretty good coach who never really connected at MSU in the way he needed to succeed. But Mark Dantonio certainly appreciated the chance to succeed right away with players such as Javon Ringer, Devin Thomas, Jehuu Caulcrick, Brian Hoyer, Otis Wiley, Jonal Saint-Dic, Ervin Baldwin, Pete Clifford, etc."

Also contains a link to an article quoting the Weber State AD, who ise most definitely not happy. And JLS is apparently going from roughly $10K/month (without incentives) to $85K/month. He had just completed his first spring practice with the football team at Weber State.

I actually don't think that Rexrode's column is level headed. People always talk about the disarray that BW left the program in. Let's not forget the disarray that JLS left here. It's not like he had us back on the road to prosperity. His best year at MSU was with BWs guys, so let's not act like he improved the team and had them poised to be competing in the B1G.

Reality is that JLS took the wheel of a clown car, and continued taking the same route as the other clown. He had no vision for the MSU Football program.

Yeah, he kept driving the clown car, but at least he shampooed all the questionable stains out of the backseat upholstery. I'll give him that much.

I just texted my buddy that goes to Arkansas about this and included my apologies. His response: "I'm not too worried. He won't make any staff changes, which is good. And it's only a year." They have no idea what they're getting themselves into.

If they wanted a MSU reject I would have loved to see them take Bobby Williams...now THATs a Trojan Horse.

JLS was a goofball, a square peg in a round hole at MSU. On top of that the state of the administration and athletic department was loosie-goosie and with the exception of Tom Izzo and Basketball, was not "all in" for being a Big Time college sports University. None of this is an excuse for JLS. He was what he was and MSU was what it was - mediocre and rowing in all different directions.

Thankfully we're past that and into a sweet spot where we have a dedication to being a premier football program from the top down. President -> AD -> Dantonio -> Staff -> Players are all in sync. Add Tom Izzo in there as a MAJOR supporting factor and we're sitting pretty damn good right now.

I don't care to hate JLS or be bitter about those years. They sucked, yes. That soaking wet, completely silent bus ride back to the commuter lot in 2006, packed with fellow Spartan fans that could only shake their heads at each other when mutual eye contact was made is something I'll never forget. But the crazy thing is, the fortunes of the last few years and the State of the Spartan Union going forward contrast all that in such a way that looking back, I can actually get a chuckle out of a lot of it. We're done with it, it's in the past. We have a lot of good days ahead. Good luck to JLS, I actually hope he does well for his 10 month reign. It would certainly create a lot of good college football discussion/debate if he did.

    Nailed it.

I never thought I would get over the 2006 Notre Dame game, but I think I finally did last year with Rocket, an entire class never losing to scUM and coming back to beat Georgia in the bowl game. MSU is not the same program. I can laugh at 2006 now. It no longer hurts.

+1 for a solid post. Probably the best that can be said was that he cleaned up Bobby's mess...and had a surprisingly good first season...but then left Coach D with a lot of work to do in recruiting, particularly on the defensive side. I don't think that he was a "bad" coach...just totally out of his element in the B1G...much like DickRod was. I don't hate him either, but I'm sure glad that he isn't our coach anymore so best of luck to him at Arkansas...and he's going to need it.

You're a fucking idiot. MSU was blowing out Notre Dame for the majority of the game. They had no answer to the Spartan running game, and weren't even in the game until JLS inexplicably decided to start throwing the ball while up 31-14 in the pouring rain. Trusting the game to Drew Stanton's arm in a downpour led directly to three turnovers, two of which resulted in Notre Dame touchdowns, as well as two three-and-outs and two penalty-filled drives resulting in punts. If JLS had decided to work the clock and keep running the ball, MSU would have won by at least 14 points, and probably more.

Go look up the breakdown of run to pass in the second half before saying if JLS would have kept on running on the ball, we would have won by 14. 17 runs to 7 passes (until the final drive). If you look at our scores in the first half, we scored on a turnover and 3 TD passes. So, while we may have gotten yardage from the running game, our scoring was coming off of passes. Also, ND was able to throw for almost 200 yards and 3 TD's in the second half. The driving rain wasn't affecting Quinn's ability to make a pass. Why was ND and Quinn able to throw a spiral in the rain and make plays, while Stanton was 0-4 with 1 INT (with 3 sacks) before the last drive.

If you were to go back and see the play by play, you'll see that in we were really able to only run in one series in the second half. All other series, we were either getting a few yards on 2 carries then had 3rd and long, or the series was killed by penalties. So, we tried running the ball to work the clock, we just weren't able to. Yes, maybe he should have gone with Caulcrick instead of Ringer, but Caulcrick had did have more carries in the second half than he did in the first half (3 in the first half, 5 in the second half)

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but the loss of this game is on Stanton as much as JLS. Stanton is the one who fumbled (which led to a 76 yard TD drive for ND), was the one who threw the pick on 3rd and 4 from our own 23 yard line, and was the one who couldn't make a play in the rain. ND was able to in the second half, we weren't.
