Guess im in the 10% on this, but what's the JLS staff connection to HR Pufnstuf & Teddy Ruxpin? I've never seen/heard this reference before.

I believe that is from the Mike Valenti meltdown after the Notre Dame game(unless Valenti got it from somewhere else).

JLS can probably make more bank in one year at Arky than 4 years at Weber.

Beat me to it. Figure the Big Sky pays about the same as Idaho in the WAC and that coach is getting $375K/season.

So JLS gets $1.5M-$2M for one season and maybe he and his wife would rather retire back in horse country of Kentucky. He gets more for one year and gets to retire earlier.

JLS is Mr. Fixit and this move also tells me there was more going on that needed to be fixed than Petrino's marriage.

Way to leave your alma mater hanging JLS.....I am very thankful that a man with honor and integrity is in charge of the MSU football program.

How are you so sure that his Weber St. Appointmentn isn't just being put on hold for a season while he helps out at Arkansas, Considering he is not the permanant solution at Ark?

How are you so sure he didn't take this temp job with Weber St.'s blessing? It could prove to be a very good thing for Weber St. In the long run.

  • Good luck to him. It didn't work out for him at Michigan State, but he ran a clean program, trusted his staff, and ended up handing over a program ready to go to the next level. From where he started in EL, it was a clear step forward. The job at Arkansas is limited and defined....keep the staff together, provide game-day experience, and try to get a team with serious potential to not take a step backward despite the idiocy of Petrino. In EL, he tried and tried to do it the right way. That's more than other coaches who've led our football team can say.......

I would be shocked if the salary is that high at Weber State.

John L's program was in no position to be handed over and ready to get to the next level. You're giving him way too much credit here. Sure he cleaned things up, but the man was never, and was never going to be a big game coach here. The end of 2006 felt much the same as 2002. Sure he won with Smith's guys, but Dantonio had his work cut out of him from the get go, he wasn't handed anything on a platter.

The Twitter says he's getting $850k and he agreed to keep the entire staff intact.

Umm...thats what the OP said...if he hadn't cleaned things up off the field MD's success would have been greatly delayed. We know that they were never going to win the big one consistantly with JLS, that was the next step that MD has taken.

Had Williams had continued on through JLS's tenure....we'd probably be on probation.

Congrats to John L. He was a great person who never could quite get over the hump here. I wish him all the best.

Why is the current rage to say that J.L. Smith wasa great PERSON!!!
Why can't people just say what it is: John L. Smith was a great GUY. What's with the "person": bullshit?? Ya afraid of offending someone???

I didn't say he was going to be a "big game coach" in East Lansing. He didn't really understand what it'd take to win titles in the Big Ten and we all felt the frustration of how damn close we were coming without being able to finish the big game. But the team was disciplined, he was recruiting talent and character, it was being done the right way, and he came up short. He was fired and rightly so, but the reality is that Dantonio had a program in place that gave him something tangible to work with when he took over. John L. tried and his passion for the game and our program was clear. I'll offer three definite beliefs - his firing was justified, the program was ready for a leader to go to the next level, and I wish John L. Smith the best. The rightness of his dismissal doesn't mean Spartans should throw him under the bus.........

I don't consider it PC at all. It's all about how somebody talks. Not everyone says "guy" just because you do. I always say person. There's nothing pre-meditated about it.

The "person" baloney has crept into normal usage in the last 10 or so years....Just irritates me to see that we as Americans are so worried about offending anyone with gender issues.
To let you know how irritating it is to me ...let me be a bit abrasive and out of line.

No. It just sounds like you're really sensitive to it. I don't think most people (or guys and dolls for you) even think about it. I know I don't.
