Just got pulled over

  • About 3 hours ago for speeding. But the cop did not give me back my license after he ran the plates. So I call the dispatcher to say either he still has it or he dropped it. I'm put on hold for ten minutes only to find out the cop doesn't have it. What a prick, looks like I'll be replacing my license on Monday upset

  • He did not. Though things could have been worse, I could not find my updated proof of insurance so he let me off on the speeding as long as I can find my insurance info. First time in 10 years I've been pulled over.

  • Call him on his desk phone and leave him a cryptic message stating that you have certain information to exchange for the retrieval of your license.

When he calls back, ask him if he'd like to make a collar on an internet poster that claims to have had sex in the champagne room last night.

    Thank me later.

  • I had been pulled over 10-15 times in the 20 years I've been driving. Everytime I have been pulled over, I have known exactly why and knew I was guilty, so I payed the fine. The exception was 10 days ago today. I was turning right on a state road onto US-131 in northern Michigan. I turned right onto 131 and a cop appeared behind me. I pulled over to let him by and he pulled up behind me. I was shocked. He asked me if I knew why I was being pulled over. I said that I had no idea. He said that I did not stop at the stop sign before I turned right. I told him that I was sure I did. He took my info and asked if I had driven all the way up there from East Lansing that day. I said yes and he went back to his car.

He gave me a ticket and I said "Sir, I am confident that I stopped and I dont agree with this ticket" He said "If you would like to contest the ticket, call the court number on the ticket in 10 days and you can setup a court date."

I called the court on Friday because 10 days would be tomorrow. The person on the phone said that I had 10 days to appear and resolve the issue or I would be in default so my options were to pay the ticket to avoid default or be there within the hour which given that it was a 2.5 hour drive for me was impossible. So I went online and had to pay the fine for a ticket I know I was not guilty of. In fact, it was so bad that I went back and took pictures of the site from exactly where the cop was sitting to prove he could not have seen my tires to gauge if I had stopped or not. I KNOW I stopped.

A court date would have been pointless, you're lucky you weren't close enough to waste your time.

The cop would lie and say that he was much closer and saw everything, and then it's your word against the cops. Appellate courts have ruled that cops are more credible than the accused, so you're toast either way.

There is a reason cops have to have their reports reviewed before they turn them in. If the desk seargeant realizes that the report shows no probable cause for a stop, he gives it back, and that cop isn't going home until he turns in one that has probable cause. The most common examples are "They were weaving between lanes", or "They didn't signal a lane change" or "I smelled marijuana".

That's the way it is. Now that you know the game, good luck. You can't beat the house, they play with a stacked deck, and lying isn't frowned upon, even when proven.

How does one drive away without their license after being pulled over? I don't get that. The cop walks back up to your car with either a ticket or a warning and hands you your license. If he/she doesn't hand you your license, you say, "May I have my license?"

I feel like there's probably more to the story.

  • I got hit by a car on an icy Ohio Turnpike while on my way to NYC and the same thing happened to me. Cop takes my ID and forgets to give it back... I didn't realize it until I went to a rest stop to grab food about 30 min later...I call in and luckily the cop dropped it off while I was eating the crap fast food at the rest stop.

  • I know it's a Freep story.

LANSING -- When Nancy Prins sent the Michigan State Police a Freedom of Information Act request in July 2008, asking for police video of her May traffic stop, she was told it was not available because the department only keeps such videos for 30 days.

A few months later, when the seat belt case involving Prins and her passenger came to trial in Ionia County, state police introduced the video of the traffic stop as evidence.

So, Prins sued State Police for violating the state FOIA law. She lost her case in circuit court, but won on appeal.

If you go on the low side and say 10 times in 20 years, that is once every other year. If you go on the high side at 15 times in 20 years, that is every year and a half, but good math.
