Kids these days are soft

  • MSU Lifer said...

Is the crime rate declining because society is "safer" or because of less opportunities?

There are a lot of reasons crime on kids is lower, most related to better enforcement, policing, etc, but either way you can worry less about your kids than you've had to in past decades.

Yep, it makes you soft. The fact that you would sit in a car instead of being social with the other kids at the stop says you have other issues as well.

And I am sorry that you need to hold onto every moment with your mom in order to feel loved. Ya see, I never had any doubts which is why I became independent and actually had desires other than your Oedipal ones.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever read. I took the bus to middle school. Guess what, It's EFFING cold outside. So if the kid down the street is in his moms van waiting for the bus and I'm invited to join them, damn right I'm joining them. I love how old people look at children and call them soft for doing things that make sense. If it's 10 degrees outside, you're not "hard" or whatever you want to call it for waiting outside, you're just stupid.

+1, although I would say we had the same sickos 30 years ago when i was a kid, we just didnt have the media to tell us about it every day.

And the sickos are aware of the media coverage they will receive which is probably adding fuel to the problem. The same "too much media coverage encourages these guys" is spouted whenever there is a mass shooting. Based on this kind of premise, it's altogether possible that there are indeed more sickos than ever before.

crime rate is declining because of Roe vs Wade. fewer fatherless hooligans.

Yes, that was documented by the Freakonomics guys.

I doubt that is really up to the kids. Actually, I could walk a mile to the bus and then take that near my work and then walk another mile. Or I could ride my bike 10 miles to work, but I choose to drive in my nice comfortable car. I suppose that makes me soft, but most adults do the exact same thing.

Is this really the case that kids are soft today? Or does everyone else have some delusional memories of themselves being bad asses when they were kids.

Again, I don't necessarily disagree, I just haven't seen any real evidence that kids today are softer than they used to be. Just a bunch of whiny internet geeks making bold accusations.

You are an adult though. No one is saying their parents used to bike or walk to work.

Kids are softer. If you were to go to any school 20 to 30 years ago, you would not see dozens and dozens of parents dropping off their kids or kids waiting in their parents' cars for the bus. You would see bus after bus unloading kids and kids standing out for the bus. The only time you saw parents dropping off their kids is when they missed the bus.

Also, I admit that my generation is softer than my parents'. The country as a whole is getting softer. Yes, it is the parents who are the ones to blame. Ask teachers how parents react when they tell them their little Johnny is being a little shit in class. Not that long ago, if you got in trouble at school, you were dreading when Dad got home from work.

So how are the Sumerians, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Spanish, British, or the Native American tribes doing these days?

well, it looks like they actually just canceled a special ceremony and chose to recognize them at some EOY assembly

“Ipswich Middle School is dedicated to high achievement in every facet of our students’ lives. We did not cancel honors recognition as erroneously reported by FOX News Boston,” he wrote. “We changed our Honors Night from an exclusive ceremony at night to an all-inclusive ceremony during the day in the presence of the entire student body.”

He continued, seemingly contradicting the letter he sent to parents explaining the change, “This isn’t the dumbing down of America. This isn’t everyone getting a trophy. The same kids who were honored before are being honored now.”

Heard about that and it's just atrocious. That's what LIFE is. Bosses are not going to treat you like that and as far as I'm concerned that principal is failing to prepare those kids for the real world. Feel bad about not getting an award? WORK HARDER TO GET AN AWARD!

I stopped there because no, clearly they are not. They are taking away reason(s) to commit high achievement. I understand there might be a separate ceremony but the point is that he still took something away from them that they worked for.

What is interesting to me is that this would be changed from an exclusive event to an all-inclusive ceremony, meaning the kids who wouldn't have been invited will now be present for the recognition of others for their achievements. This guy has no clue what he's doing and this is spiraling into ridiculousness, lol. He needs to just stfu and leave things how they were planned to be.
