Killing Lincoln

  • Has anyone else read this book yet? I am about halfway through and it is very interesting. The number of connections between Booth and Lincoln are incredible. Also, I find it absolutely amazing that (even at that time) the President would walk around without a bodyguard.

I visited Ford's Theater for the first time back in the fall and it was truly amazing to see the box Lincoln was sitting in when he was killed.

Anyway, I am enjoying the book and was just curious if others are as well.

  • I was going to, but read a critical review of it. Apparently it contains a lot of inaccuracies and little original research.

I work just around the corner from Ford's Theater and haven't been there yet. lol

  • Just watch Brad Melzer's Decoded on the History Channel. It'll take way less time and make you think about the coverup re: finding Booth.

apparently there are so many inaccuracies in it is practically fictitious - so I wouldn't put too much credence into the authenticity of it's contents..

Most of the inaccuracies are apparently not related to the actual events (from what I have read). They are just things like saying there was an oval office (which there was not until 1909).

The timeline of Booth and Lincoln is true (apparently).

  • I hear that it has the authenticity and reliability of a Hondo article.

    Yep.

"A reviewer for the official National Park Service bookstore at Ford’s Theatre has recommended that Bill O’Reilly’s bestselling new book about the Lincoln assassination not be sold at the historic site “because of the lack of documentation and the factual errors within the publication.”

Lincoln did have a guard assigned to him at the theater, but he wasn't the best choice as it turned out:

The chair the President was sitting on is at The Henry Ford in Dearborn.

Yes I've never heard the conspiracy theories until I watched this. Definitely worth the 45 minutes to watch it.

I watched it too, and found it interesting, but don't think I buy it. The Decoded episode on the modern mafia, basically the Mexican cartels, was downright scared.

  • Are the inaccuracies big items? I heard one was: "Lincoln didn't have an Oval Office, it wasn't built yet." which didn't matter to me.

you're certainly welcome to believe what you want.. but US historical societies and various entities that make historically accurate books available won't sell the book, as they don't want to be viewed as endorsing fiction veiled as non-fiction..

I wouldn't read it either way because, frankly, I don't know how to read..

lol So, you responded to a post that someone else read out loud for you?

  • I read this book a couple years ago and definitely recommend it. Interesting stuff.

  • Never have I been so inclined to urge you to avoid the atrocities contained within this bounded collection of toilet tissue based on the gross misconception of actual events portrayed so falsely that even a Martian sent through galactical time would know them to be untrue!

Take that book and THROW IT DOWN into the trash can, big fella!

When the National Parks Service at Ford's Theater won't recommend a book based on historical inaccuracies, that's all I need to know. If there were ever historians that would know about Lincoln's assassination, it would be them.

FWIW, there are dozens of very interesting books about the Lincoln assassination that are actually factual and written by, you know, a historian instead of a former Inside Edition host.

Do you have any that you recommend? I definitely like to read a few of them.

Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell is good (also includes stuff about the assassinations of Garfield and McKinley, but the Lincoln stuff is by the longest).

I heard/read the same thing. So I'll pass on it. I cannot stand it when books selling "history" are historically "inaccurate". I know a history prof who will not read it.

If he got the Oval Office wrong, what else did he get wrong? That is a pretty major thing to get wrong being that it is the President's main office now, and it wasn't even built until 50 years after the time that the book is set in.

There are tons of really good books on the Lincoln assassination. Lots of juicy conspiracy theories too if possible inaccuracies and speculation is your thing. I'll trust historians over a former tabloid show host who is the definition of self-absorbed.

  • And if you're looking for a Lincoln assassination book, this one seems to be getting high praise from historians.
