Korie Lucious or Brandon Wood

  • Based upon what we have seen thus far from Wood, who would you rather have on this year's MSU hoop team? Korie is obviously at ISU and has to sit out this year, but based upon his game and progression we saw, who do you like better for MSU? Let's not turn this into a bash Korie thread, he did some great things here at MSU. Unfortunately, he was not able to complete his eligibilty here and it was time to move on. Personally, I would like to see more from Wood against the B1G teams to more fairly assess, but I like what I see so far. Has the toughness that Izzo likes. Can play defense. Is more a scorer than a shooter, but can definitely hit the 3. Looks to be a solid rebounder for a guard as well. Korie would drive me crazy with careless turnovers, but was nearly automatic at the line, was a streaky shooter, but was coming on pretty good in terms of getting into the paint to create or finish with runners etc.

For me, Wood brings more to the table defensively, and appears to fit in nicely with the team. What could have been a huge loss was really softened by the addition of Wood. Again, will know more once we get into the meat of the B1G schedule, but edge to Wood right now for me.

I will always love Korie though.

  • They play different positions so it's hard to compare directly. Luckily, Trice has been pretty good so we haven't been hurting at the point. Though, I really think Appling would be more productive off the ball.

Wood has been a very good fit. Glad to have him at MSU.

  • Every morning i wake up i'm happy to have Wood.

Your average UofM fan and I have something in common, neither of us went to UofM. Though we do share One major difference, I got Accepted.

  • No disrespect to Wood, but I'd rather have the guy who went to back-to-back Final Fours and put the dagger in Maryland's heart.

This, can't take Wood over Korie just yet.

I agree with you about hard to compare etc. I guess where I was going is that if we have Lucious, we more than likely don't really even consider Wood. I think at this point, Trice was already locked up, so to speak. Wood indeed has been a great fit. Very happy to have him. Probably not fair to even compare them, but it generates discussion about it, and thus far, everyone has been above board in that which is good.

Appling is interesting point you make. I understand it, and agree, but I like having him at PG, allowing us to be bigger on the wing. Maybe a silver lining is that not having Korie has allowed Trice to develop on the floor more. Again, we'll know a lot more about everyone once we start getting into the B1G.

  • If you're a fan and you love the big shot you can say Lucious. It's an affection thing. But if you know a damn thing about basketball you'd say Wood.

    mark_v

  • Korie is a good player and did huge things for the program in the 2010 tourney, but my perception in the short period we've seen Brandon Wood is that he's a less timid playmaker over the course of a game, and that's what the team needed more than anything this season. As mentioned above though, different positions.

Plus he looks like one suave motherfucker.

Lucious produced one of the most memorable moments in Spartan history. Some of you are crazy with the hate you have for him now. He was young and messed up. It happens.

Don't hate Korie, just glad he is somewhere else and we have Wood. I hate scUM, I hate Wisconsin, I don't hate Korie Lucious.

  • I'll take the one that isn't an idiot. Plus, Wood is a proven scorer.

    ROtown Sparty

  • The obvious answer is Wood. Wood's contribution is concrete and real. He is playing well and his adjustment to being a Spartan is continuous and discernable. Any musings on how well Korie would be playing now are pure speculation. He never showed much of a propensity for consistency - plus he's a bit twee.

    Korie ... a bit twee.

    Twee?

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

    red_cedar

  • Wood, of course. No disrespect to Korie, but he had a lot of poor shooting nights, and had a tendency to force shots.

    Nommad

  • Wood plays under control and sticks the open 3 with consistency. Plus he is a better defensive player and a much better rebounder. Based on this admittedly small sample size, Wood seems like the better player to me. Korie's big shot shouldn't factor into this discussion; it's not asking who you LIKE more, but who is a better player.

I haven't seen anyone say that they hate Lucious.

    Eds Medicine24630

  • Lucious never really impressed me as a point guard and although he was arguably a better shooter, Wood is the more creative scorer.

However, I'd still like to see Wood's game when he's facing Big Ten teams for the second time in the season before definitively saying he's better than Lucious.

    Spyke

  • Well, for me it depends on whether you're talking about skill sets alone or the whole package. If it's just skill sets, I think we'd be better off with another experienced point guard. We would not have to rely on Appling to grow into an unfamiliar position, but could use him from time to time in the PG rotation. If either Trice or Appling goes down with an injury, we'll be in bad shape at the point. So if we're talking skill sets, I'd go with Lucious.

But in reality we could not get just the skill sets, From what I've read, it seems that Lucious was also a disruptive force in team chemistry. This year's team has so far shown far better chemistry, and it's making a huge difference. Wood apparently contributes to it (or at least isn't wrecking it), so taking the whole package, I think I pick Wood. But I really hope Trice and Appllng don't get hurt.

Korie will always be loved for that moment and should never be hated for the ultimate dismissal. However, as much as I loved that one shot, he was inconsistent on the court and had troubles off the court that caused distractions to the entire team. There's a lot of season left, but so far Wood seems to be the humble hard worker that will do very well.
