Fact: We recruit against ND, UM and OSU. It doesn't get more difficult than that. Now that each of those programs have stabilized, they are starting to consistently beat us in recruiting battles and it will not end any time soon. We are very quickly going to return to a mid-level B10 power if nothing changes. That is a reality.
Option 1: Try to expand our recruiting into places like Missouri, NJ, Fla and Georgia. Problem: We've tried that before. It doesn't work. Like it not, the MSU brand doesn't have enough cache to pull top level talent from states outside of our region.
Option 2: Rebrand. Go all in with Nike. Become Oregon. Who the F cared about Oregon before they did the uniform thing? They created an identity for themselves and now they are running with USC and they sunk Wash and UCLA in the process.
We have a bad ass logo. Our uniforms for the last too UM games were fricken' awesome. Let's do that every week. We have a good enough team to win for the next few years. Let's win; and let's look like a modern, confident, cutting-edge program that has attitude while doing it.
Listen, we can't beat OSU, UM and ND on their terms. That is, we can't beat them when it comes to perceived "tradition" (I think it's BS, but whatever, it's the reality we face). We need an identity that separates us from the triumvirate. We've done a lot of great things with Sparty and the in-game atmosphere. It's time to go all-in. We've got the perfect AD to pull this off. Take his shackles off and let him rebrand this program for the 21st century.
That is all.

I hear you. But at this point I don't care.
Actually, I think what would happen is we'd get young fans "jumping on the band wagon". Our shit would sell, I guarantee you that.
We have a great theme to build around - Spartans. I mean, come on. That is is smart, creative person's dream mascot for building a bad ass image for a football program? Certainly 10x easier than working with Ducks.
The old stuffy types will stick with the traditional powers. But everything is changing and it is changing quickly. Sticking to a tradition is an inefficiency for MSU right now. It is a competition we can't win. As much it sucks, the truth is that no matter what we do ND will beat us in game of "tradition" each and every single time. It is time to shift gears. The retro look is about the jump the shark anyways. It's time for MSU to be radically modern. Better yet, radically futuristic...I mean that is where the future is after all (rim shot)...
