Last school to make the postseason in 4 major sports..

No idiot... but if you add a men's program you have to offset the scholarships by bringing in a woman's program. Men's hockey can at least pay for itself at most schools. The reason its so expensive is that it requires you to add another non revenue sport to be Title IX compliant.

You need to brush on up on title IX. They don't require equal scholarships.

Men's hockey would not be financially viable at the 120 FBS schools because they don't have enough fans to watch in person or on TV. If the sport made any sense to add, schools would. Hell, I'm not even certain there would be enough athletes to keep the field competitive if you expanded 10 fold.

  • The term "major" sport is pretty vague. You've got the two revenue sports -- football and basketball. Then you've got baseball which is third in the pecking order. The discussion should probably start and end with those three sports. After that, there is no really no definitive fourth "major" sport from a national perspective. Whatever it is, it's definitely not hockey. Maybe softball? Soccer? It's got to be something most every university participates in, and isn't too obscure.

It can at Alabama-Huntsville but there is the other problem of not having a conference for those teams to play in.

They barely avoided dropping to club status this year. And it's a money loser, meaning it doesn't pay for itself.

Oh okay its about fans. Here I thought had something to do with costs and title ix compliance. While I go brush up on that why don't you go find the attendance figures for all those sports that have so many more fans than hockey. The girls rifle team at Arkansas obviously draws several thousand right? Title IX compliance is far and away the issue most places. You can't just add a men's sport if you have a football team.

  • Don't forget we made the Quarter Finals for the fourth straight year in Dodgeball. Not something to shake a stick at.

After beating the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in round one of the National Tournament, the Spartans lost to rival Saginaw Valley in the second round of the tournament. The first game of the day featured MSU versus WKU, and it was a great battle. The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead going into the half thanks to strong team play, but the Toppers took the first point of the second half to make it 2-1. The Spartans, led by captains Sam Hiller and Andy Malnor, along with Alex Acton and Eric Paul, were able to hold off WKU to win the match.

MSU next played SVSU, and they once again quickly fell to a disadvantage. The Cardinals exploded for 3 points in the first 19 minutes against MSU, but State would not go quietly into the night. In a true team effort they battled back and almost scored a point going into the half, but then they played even better and picked up a two second half points and almost tied the game before the final buzzer sounded on the team’s season. SVSU would go on to beat GVSU and Kentucky to win the National Championship.

Overall Michigan State finished the season with an 11-9 record, and they made it to the National Quarterfinal for the 4th straight season.

It loses money as an independent. They almost dropped to club because they can't find a conference partner. UAH would generate revenue in a legitimate conference. UNO hockey is a revenue sport.

Neither is baseball or hockey in college.

Why not? Many of these guys go on to play in the MLB and NHL and make millions. I'd say that is pretty "major".

Women's hoops leads to some going to the wnba and making thousands of dollars in front of half empty arenas.

Baseball may not be major up here, but go see down south. Also, hockey is a lot bigger than you think.

Many wrestlers go on to make millions in MMA or the WWE, but I don't consider wrestling a "major" college sport either. Same with golf.

  • To answer the original question, it was Florida State last year.

  • While I don't know anything about Florida State hockey, I can tell you that Ohio State made the post season in football, basketball, baseball, and hockey in 2009.

  • We made the Quidditch tourney too didn't we?
There are two major sports in college. And two regional ones.

Nice. The BIG is such a well rounded conference. As someone said, there are 12 BCS schools that play D1 hockey, and half of them are in the BIG. I also think its pathetic that Iowa, Illinois, and indiana don't have programs. Chicago is a hockey hotbed area, Iowa is in the heartland of the USHL, and other junior programs in their backyard in Minnesota and Wisconsin and IU has a pretty large enrollment along wih having large talent pools in border states.

Nebraska has some connection to UNO (if I understand it correctly) so they're indirectly involved and I guess they see that as sufficient so I'll give them a pass. Purdue is just.... Purdue, blechhh. Weak fan support. Northwestern Is a small AD and I could understand why funding would be an issue to a private school. But like Illinois, and even moreso because they're "chicago's BIG team" in case you weren't painfully aware, they would have plenty of prospects in the area.

Wrestling is an Olympic sport. Yeah the occasional Wrestler goes to MMA or WWE but I would put that at around 0.1%. A lot of schools have Wrestling teams, hell Olivet, and Oakland have Wrestling teams. There are Div II programs that are better then Div I programs in wrestling. It is also a revenue sport at many schools, Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Okie State, PSU, and probably even CMU, MSU and UM make money off their wrestling programs, of course they only have about 9 scholarships total for 10 varsity slots. So a lot of Wrestlers are on Partial Schollies.

lol I challenge you to show me a financial statement that shows MSU or UM make $ on wrestling. The travel costs alone are a killer.
