Laughing gas(N2O) in the Dentist's office

  • I have to get a couple of teeth pulled and am feaking out about it.
    My Dentist doesnt put you under, uses novocaine and N20. I could get referred to another Dentist that does put you under via an IV, but the cost is twice what the other method is. I dont have dental insurance.
    So just curious if N2O relaxes you enough to where it wont be a situation where i am not comfortable.
    If you havent already noticed, i dont enjoy going to the Dentist at all, and am edgy in the chair.
    Will pony up the extra coin if need be, just dont know much about N2O.

    Go for it.

    It is like getting Versed or valium for sedation. Makes you relaxed enough so that you don't really care what is going on. You will like it!

  • Honestly, you have nothing to worry about. Local is much easier and probably means you can do things like drive later that day.

    I would not want to be put completely under to have teeth pulled...it's not that bad.

    I insist that my dentist work on my teeth by way of the anus. The thought of someone sticking their fingers in my mouth is gross.

    I am totally a basket case in the chair, my wife said to get an IV, but this N2O sounds like it might be the way to go, and the Dentist told me i can drive back to work.
    I have just googled about this stuff the last week or so and read mixed reports as to how effective N2O indeed is, some say its great, others say they can get the mixture wrong( supposed to generally be like 30%) and you really are alert enough to where it doesnt have a lot of effect.

    BTW...Does it make you laugh?

  • Has anyone else noticed that there’s a good amount of bypass from the NOS hose? I mean, those things likely run all day in that small room. I wonder how baked the Dr’s are when they’re preforming surgery on you?

    Hell, I only had the local plus the N20 when I had my wisdom teeth pulled! I'm sure you'll be fine. You are a Spartan, right? ;)

    And yes, I was pretty giggly afterwards. During the procedure I just felt floaty and happy more than anything; I didn't laugh DURING the procedure. Best of luck to you!

    If I remember right, it made me not care that the dentist was drilling and pulling as hard as he could. I didn't laugh, but simultaneously being numb and not having a care in the world is a pretty fantastic feeling.

  • Just had a root canal with the same combo. I actually fell asleep during the procedure...that's how relaxed I was.

    Nitrous also affects different people in different ways. The same "mixture" can put one person to sleep while the next person swears they don't think it is working and it may need to be turned up a little for them. Nitrous works great for people who are mildly to moderately anxious, but is not enough for everyone - severely anxious people will still need to be put to sleep.

    Ok, because reading through this thread, my experience was way different. I chose not to be put under when having my wisdom teeth pulled because i didn't want to be retarded afterwards and i could swear that the gas wasn't doing much for me. I kept expecting to feel real loopy all of a sudden but i didn't feel much.

  • Haven't had it since I was around 11 years old (so a couple of weeks ago i guess) but it was just for having teeth pulled like you. Didn't feel anything and was too young to enjoy the high. I feel cheated.
