  • MSU is going to be scary good with their LB play and DB play for a while. LT, Harris, Jones, Jones, Reschke...plus Allen and Bullough both are only juniors.

In the secondary, Lewis and Dennard two years each left plus the recruits from last year (Cox is going to be a crazy stud imo).

Got enough DL talent for a few years, need to land some quality DTs this class (looks like some FL talent is high on MSU). biggrin

And the D is losing just 3 starters after 2012 in J5, ARW, and Norman. Call me a homer, but I think Gholston stays for 2013.

Only way Gholston stays is if we have a terrible season and I don't see that Happining.

  • Only way Gjolston stays is if he's hurt, so let's not wish for that. MD will tell him to go when he gets that top 20 grade.

If Dantonio can get Gholston to believe MSU has a shot at a NT next year- I think he stays.

The schedule sets up extremely well..

I think he has a better chance of staying that some people think. People need to keep in mind, he's only a true junior. He basically would only have 2 1/2 yrs at MSU if he left after the season. Some people enjoy college, and wouldn't mind sticking around another year if A) can win big or B) can improve draft stock. If he were a redshirt junior, ala Worthy, he'd be gone without a doubt.

    Who said this?

From a couple of past RCRs. I guess it's not 100% certain, but looks to be highly likely.

** Lawrence Thomas is ready to tell Mark Dantonio he will commit to playing defensive end – full time. Thomas is entering his redshirt freshman season after sitting out last season with a shoulder injury.Thomas is weighing in around 262 pounds right now and the coaching staff wants him to be around 275-280 in order to play defensive end. Junior defensive end William Gholston and Dantonio had a similar conversation at Ford Field while preparing for Florida Atlantic back in Sept. 2010. Thomas can see the benefits of Gholston playing defensive end over linebacker. Gholston still considers himself a linebacker at heart and so will Thomas.

**2013 MSU linebacker commit Jon Reschke was quite pumped to find out freshman linebacker Lawrence Thomas will make the full-time switch to defensive end. Reschke feels it’s now up to him to step up and play behind Max Bulllough once he arrives on campus. Reschke knows the opportunity is there and he simply needs to take advantage.

Exactly, anything short of NC or Rose Bowl and he comes back.
B1G Will has to EAT. Going 10-20 in the draft vs 1-5 and (+MSU life style)=Win

Then again, in light of this- perhaps being at MSU feels to him like he's livin' like a King..

Big Will is going to be an MSU Icon. I can see him wanting to solidify the culture of Spartan Defense. But I want him to do what he wants to do, no doubt about it!

He already is an icon here. Even Magic left early.

I'm all for guys staying and making an impact and I understand motivations behind staying or going can involve all sorts of angles, but if Big Will is a high first round, even Dantonio would not hesitate to say goodbye. He can do a lot of the university as an NFL player, too.

  • 2012 available DE's:

    William Gholston
    Marcus Rush
    Taylor Calero
    Shilique Calhoun
    Corey Freeman
    Jeremy Gainer
    Joel Heath
    Lawerence Thomas

Realistically I don't see Calero staying at this position unless he makes significant strides over the summer and into preseason camp. Freeman, who was once considered to be MSU's best DE prospect is now struggling to find the field due to the ever increasing level of talent. I originally thought Davis would grow into a DE, but now I am not so sure. Jamal Lyles is coming in this year being listed as a DE, but his weight is listed at 218# which is a little too light for him to be game ready this year so he is likely not going to see time in the rotation until 2014. The two years of grooming should allow him to grow into a viable every down DE in the mold of Rush who is playing somewhere in the 250 range. Lyles should be able to add 30+ pounds of lean muscle without losing a step.

Hoover is still in the mix, but he is definitely a huge DE at this point with reports of him in the 300# range. Could he still be used as a DE this season? Probably but that would entail specific down and distance situations.

If MSU can get a consistent bowl like performance ought of White, and Pickelman like play from Kittredge, Knox, Clemons, Reynolds, and the above mentioned Hoover. This defense line is going to be lethal. A nickname like "Death Row" may be appropriate because quarterbacks are going to be this line's last meal. The DL has got to eat.
