Lawyers make on average of a buck 30 a year.

Going solo was the best decision I ever made. I'm not making Tanfan money (yet) but I don't have any partners breathing down my neck, I get credit for all the work that I do and I don't have to work on holidays. I also get to practice in the areas of law I want to practice.

Did you go solo right out of school?

becoming a DUI lawyer is not a bad way to go if you dont want to go big firm. One of the top DUI lawyers around my city charges 5K to take your case and 10K if it goes to trial. not bad at all

That's about $3K too much to dispose of it and $5K too much to try it.

  • Surgeons in an urban hospital area are making way more than the average listed...they were probably too busy counting their money to respond to the survey. Maybe they lumped them with GPs, who would bring average down.

true but he gets a ton of business. plus if you are looking at your 3rd DUI conviction within 10 years it gets bumped up to a felony so people get desperate

Making 150-200k in house is the way to go. Become friends with the GC and you're set.

That's a nice gig. Easy work.

Good for you. Keep your overhead down and don't be afraid to take a few risks on some big cases when the come along. If you get a big case and want some help evaluating it, feel free to pm me. I still do some defense work for a major insurance carrier. It keeps my hand in the cookie jar so to speak when it comes to evaluating damages.

  • Thank god i didnt waste about 10 years of my life( and go way into debt doing so) to make the kind of money the OP refers to by being an ambulance chaser.
That wouldnt allow me to go on the vacations i do, and have the extra knock around money i have.

  • Does this include all of the un/under employed law school people? If you passed the bar, but all you can do is find a gig as an secretary... does that make you a lawyer or a secretary?

Not lying, and didnt say i didnt have an education, just not a law degree.

Generally i am at the figure from the OP right about this time of year, give or take a couple of weeks.
And yes, i do own my own business, and am here 43 hours a week but i am out East about 4 or 5 days a month working but out of the office.

    Ah ha...Tanner
I see what got your panties in a bunch, the ambulance chaser comment...lol

No panties in a bunch. Congrats on the fact that your business is doing well. Nice to know you demand excellence and as a result are very successful. Like you I earn above that average. Last year it Would be in excess of 10 times that average. Very unusual as my business has ebbs and flows. I'm getting ready to retire early. I'll just do happy law in a couple of years. Problem is all this horribly injured people keep hiring me. I feel I have a moral obligation to take their cases to trial if I don't get top dollar. Looks like next year will be over 10 times that average again. Oh well. I suck. By the way. I hate the IRS.

Pays to have a good accountant..lol

My business has a ton of rocks to crawl under, she showed us after expenses making about 30k last year, i had a single month last year i made about 2k less than that.

Btw, i am 56, i could actually ramp my business up more to perhaps double what i make currently, but you get to a point to where the effort and responsibility arent worth it. I am at and have been at that point a while, i enjoy being able to fuck off.

I'm 52 and gonna retire from hard Core trial work in about two years. I'll transition into happy law like adoptions, probate, charity work. I'll never completely retire as I'll go nuts just sitting around. Who knows. Tell the IRS to blow me.
