Let's go Pitt!

    McGary simply looks lost.

Something happened there. The guy was listed top 5 on draft boards a year ago and now he doesn't make top 30 Freshman lists. Very strange.

He'll provide them with fouls, a few rebounds, and the occasional dunk. Maybe he improves and is a major contributor next season. Right now he looks like a different player than the one they recruited.

Playing against kids 2 years younger that you might have something to do with that. He got completely destroyed by Nerlens Noel and his stock plummeted. People started realizing he was playing against 16-18 year olds and cant hack it against the big boys. Not really anything too crazy.

  • We really need to figure how to score consistently on a zone. We weren't even very good at it last year with Draymond.

Good point, we will not beat UM without good zone offense. I think with Harris driving the gaps and Dawson at the top most making plays we will be OK. Actually, Valentine will be perfect in the middle of the zone driving and creating opps. Love that kid already.

Harris, if healthy, and Valentine are both players who could be big helps against a zone.

We don't play Michigan for nearly three months. Both teams will look a lot different by then.

What did you beat the powerhouse Boise last night by?

Come talk to me when you beat someone with Burke and Hardaway out of the game.

  • Apparently Pitt is consistently a top program and this particular team will not be unranked for long.

    Delusional and baseless.

They still take bad shots. Their front court looks terrible. K State might actually expose them in the post.

One dimensional team that has to rely on Burke to create shots.

I disagree. They win 13--16 B1G games and contend for the title. Not sure what game you were watching. Those freshman are only getting better. Just like ours.

You are basing this on a win against a mediocre Pitt team?

If that is the case, MSU is NIT bound based on last night's game.

    Pittsburgh under Jamie Dixon
    2003–04 Pittsburgh 31–5 13–3 1st NCAA Sweet Sixteen
    2004–05 Pittsburgh 20–9 10–6 5th NCAA 1st Round
    2005–06 Pittsburgh 25–8 10–6 T–4th NCAA 2nd Round
    2006–07 Pittsburgh 29–8 12–4 T–2nd NCAA Sweet Sixteen
    2007–08 Pittsburgh 27–10 10–8 7th NCAA 2nd Round
    2008–09 Pittsburgh 31–5 15–3 T–2nd NCAA Elite Eight
    2009–10 Pittsburgh 25–9 13–5 T–2nd NCAA 2nd Round
    2010–11 Pittsburgh 28–6 15–3 1st NCAA 3rd Round
    2011–12 Pittsburgh 22–17 5–13 T–13th CBI Champions

Outside of last year which looks like an anomaly , I would say they are pretty consistent. Going to be a fun year in conference play.

Jamie Dixon is a pretty good coach, he's had some good rankings over the years and has put some good players through the program...watching last night and recalling the previous MSU vs Pitt in fb games I felt like Pitt was a much better match for the Big 14 conference expansion plans than the teams we got.

Dunk? He can barely dunk a basketball, he's a good rebounder, that's it. I wouldn't trade Gauna for him. He's also 20-1/2 years old now, how much better is he going to get?

McGary didn't start for his high school team, Michigan recruited a HS sixth man and thought he'd be good in college.

Lot of other people recruited him, too. Just saying it is very strange to see someone plummet the way he has.

He was ranked #2 when he was 18/19 playing against 16/17 year olds. When scouts realized he has no O game, they dropped him accordingly.

My dad was asking me about B___ killing it on the recruiting trail. I'm not convinced he's doing that well. He lucked into GR3 who blew up after he committed, and he happened to be best friends with a massively overhyped McGary. Burke wasn't all-world, and Harris + Sims were the old regime. I don't doubt that B___ is turning the program around, but I'm not sure their recruiting, like everything about that school, isn't fluffed by the media.

Well, he beat out all the top schools for McGary, but if you don't want to give him credit for that his 2013 class is very highly thought of. Obviously a big part of his success has been at out evaluating schools for kids like Burke, Hardaway, and GR3, but he's definitely picked it up compared to his first class.

Seriously can we put Pitt/B1G to bed. We can add Pitt but it will cost every school 2 million a year when they bring little money to the table but still get their share.

Pitt's recent success was due to a recruit named Ashton Gibbs, who led the team and was a powerhouse in his Junior year. Unfortunately Ashton decided to pull a Kalin Lucas move and come back his senior year only to go undrafted and not make the NCAA tourney. His youngest brother is going to be a fantastic player - I think last I talked to him he was dead set on Texas.

Jamie Dixon < John Beilein. There was no chance Pitt beats Michigan last night.

How did Dixon develop this reputation as being a good coach?!

Not really, he got ranked high as a 19 year old playing against 16-17 year olds, as soon as his last year in high school started his stock fell because he wasn't even a starter on his team and he got abused by any decent bug he played against. I think scouts didn't realize how old he was. So then they dropped him to 35 or so, which obviously was still wag way too high.

The kid will be 21 after the season, he's not going to get more coordinated or more athletic, he's a tomato can and will a struggle to score at all in B1G play. scUM fans should be happy with GRIII, Jesus McGary? When I saw film if him I knew he sucked and was a total non athlete, he'll never be a good college player.
