Leyland was rignt (blown call today)

  • The play in extra innings today when Leyland argued? Slo-Mo showed he was right, the ball clearly went off the bunter's knee. Umps blew the call, and obviously Someone in the Tigers dugout saw it.

(Full disclosure, Michigander and MSU alum, but I've lived in Texas for 30 years and am a Rangers fan now. THAT took about 10-15 years to happen.)

HOWEVER, in the umps defense, the Ranger's announcers didn't catch it on replay until after the commercial break after the inning was over. Tom Grieve is our color commentator, former major league player and Ranger GM. Usually his technical analysis is stellar. He knows the game, knows the rules, knows what to look for, and HE missed it on a slow motion replay more than once, as the argument was going on. For the umpire, or crew, to have missed it at full speed, live, only getting to see it once, and being prevented from using replay was forgiveable. Blown call, to be certain, but to actually see that as the Home Plate ump, well, he was screened by the batter's body. For any of the other umpires to call that, THAT fast, from 30+ yards away, well, that's a pretty tough call to make. You could only make it out when the ball changed directions in slow motion.

What Grieve said after seeing the replay that showed it was, "the Rangers caught a break". and they did. And unless and until baseball goes to much more replay, that's simply part of the game.

But, bottom line, Leyland was right. As a Rangers fan, I'm grateful for the win. They've lost their fair share (or more) on bad breaks over the years.

  • It was a clear Welkie blew another call for anyone watching on FSD.

Of course if they get the call right its still 0-1 with bases still loaded and no outs.

  • Old news

    I'm over it already

If our high powered offense would've scored more than 2 lousy runs, it wouldn't have mattered

    0-6 (A Avila 0-1, P Fielder 0-1, A Jackson 0-1, B Boesch 0-2, M Cabrera 0-1)

This was the reason the Tigers lost today.

Exactly. This loss is on Leyland, not on the umpire(s).

  • If I was the Tigers I would take what might happen as what did happen. There was no excuse to miss the call. My word there is 4 of them.

Spoken like someone who has never umpired a baseball game. Please tell us oh wise one, how is an umpire supposed to see through someones body? And how is someone 90 feet away supposed to see something as small as a baseball moving at 90+ miles an hour glance off the knee of a moving person? Until you have been in the umpires situation, you have no right to make a judgement on what "should have happened".

  • The home plate ump actually did the right thing and conferenced with the 2B ump about the play. The 2B ump should be in better position to judge whether it was a good bunt or foul.

For whatever reason, the 2B ump decided not to overturn the call...whether he didn't see it, or was not in position to see it, or was focusing on the runners moving all over the place, none of the field umps wanted to overturn the call.

I had a situation in a game I umpired last week (by myself) where a ball supposedly hit the batter while trickling fair. I had to look through both the catcher and the batter and only saw the ball going forward. You can't call what you can't see, plain and simple. In fairness had I had a base umpire to confer with, I most certainly would have asked for help. But I sure as hell won't take a coach's word for it.

This loss is on the anemic hitting, not Leyland.

i tend to agree but pinch hitting someone in extra innings who has a season average of .056 isn't exactly a great way to jump start anemic hitting
