  • Campaign to put this before the voters could begin this week.

  • A casino in GR would be awesome but it would make some conservative heads explode. I don't think it stands a chance.

  • The overall casino measure would require approval of a majority of voters statewide, and a majority in each community that would get a casino. Any casino that didn't win a majority vote in a local community would not be built.

    If approved:

    • All of the casinos would be regulated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the state agency that licenses and regulates Detroit's casinos.

    • Under a new constitutional amendment, all casinos would be taxed at 23% of adjusted gross receipts, higher than the current 19% rate in Detroit.

    • At the new suburban and outstate private casinos, 30% of wagering tax revenue would be set aside for K-12 schools statewide; 20% would distributed statewide for public safety; 20% would go to the community in which each casino is located, and 20% would go to each county where the casinos would be built. Statewide road repair and gambling addiction programs would each receive a dedicated 5% of the tax revenue.

    • From the new and existing Detroit casinos, 60% of tax revenue would pay for police and fire services, 20% would go to the state school aid fund and 20% would be earmarked for roadwork statewide.

    Cause gr is sooooooooooo conservative?

So now Lansing has two proposed casinos? That region will never get their shit together.

    1. Lansing could use a casino big time.
    2. They should definitely put the Detroit casino along the riverfront, and connect it to the RenCen via a tunnel/walkway of some sort.

Why? So poor people trying to hit it big can leave with even less money? We don't need a casino in Lansing and the state doesn't need any more than we already have. I would argue we already have too many.

  • In before Wells.

Don't see how this will get around that phony referendum from a few years ago that made certain that Detroit casinos wouldn't have any competition.

But it would be nice to go to a casino where the games are legit. Not so sure the tribal ones are.

  • Any word on if the proposed casinos in Metro Detroit (Clinton Township, Pontiac, Romulus, Detroit) would be exempt from the smoking ban like the 3 casinos in Detroit? Not going to lie, I spend a lot of time playing poker downtown, but I hate walking through the smoke to get to and from the poker rooms (or worse than that, the way the smoke filters into the MotorCity poker room). Smoke free casinos in the suburbs might not be so bad

And if the good Lord’s willin’, I’m a keep on chillin’, refillin’ and flyin’ high

Didn't Secchia throw in his support for the GR casino? Believe some of the GR power brokers have resigned to the fact that Gun Lake is pulling entertainment dollars away from the city.

Who is going to travel to Lansing for a casino? Between the three in Detroit, Firekeepers in Battle Creek and Soaring Eagle in Mt. Pleasant there are five decent sized casinos with in 75 miles of Lansing. Unless they do something magnificent (and it doesn't appear that way, no theater or hotel plans) basically you are looking at the local population as the only people who will be doing any gambling at the Lansing casino plus occasional Lansing Center visitor.

Poor people also drink and smoke. Most of them can hardly afford to do that either financially or health wise. One could argue that more widespread harm to people is associated with drinking and smoking than with going to a casino.

This. Plus I'd argue anyone on public assistance should not be allowed in to any casino. If you can't afford life's basic necessities, you certainly can't afford to gamble.

It needs to go at the site of the current post office/old building with nothing in it across from the convention center. It would be awesome right there.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't mind them and in fact, I think they have the ability to trickle down to a lot of related businesses. However, it's odd that it almost feels that the state is now basing its recovery on casinos.

Nothing more pathetic then to walk through a casino and see the desperation on peoples face and to realize the people who can least afford to be there are there in the largest numbers.

  • This would be fantastic for the region, but it's overkill. 1 In GR, 1 in Lansing, 2 in Det, maybe one in the UP or North if you wanna go crazy - but not 8.

  • Yes, Detroit, Romulus, and Pontiac all need casinos. That will help the area no

If Detroit wants to build something to save itself, it needs to turn into the Amsterdam of the US, with Gambling, Prostitution, and soft drugs becoming legal in the City. All, of course under strict control by anybody but the city of Detroit.

But this'll never ever happen with the state of the "Religious Community" in the D.

    Always Smooth.

There's any number of other reasons you can argue against building more casinos, but I absolutely hate the "won't someone please think of the poor" excuse. Smacks of elitist paternalism to me.

Not really. There is a strip club right down the street from the proposed location of the casino. If heads didn't explode over that, they surely won't from a casino. Hell, I'd venture to guess that the conservative rate is much higher in the area of the Gun Lake casino and I don't recall any heads exploding from that. In fact, the conservative folk flocked in droves to that place on the opening weekend (only time i've been there).
