Looking ahead to next season...

  • I think our starting line-up will be something like this:

    Appling
    Harris
    Dawson
    Costello/Kaminski
    Payne

Regularly off the bench: Nix, Trice, Kearney, Gauna, and one of Byrd or Valentine.

I love the rotation at guard, with Appling, Harris, Trice, and Kearney all being able to play together. The two-headed center of Payne/Nix is still a strength (even if they sucked tonight), and the other three bigs will split time at the PF position. I honestly feel like one of the freshmen will start at PF. Depth at SF is a bit of a concern with Dawson coming off an injury and no natural back-up behind him, but I have a feeling that one of Byrd or Valentine will step up (Valentine can probably play the 1, 2, and 3).

Obviously, 12 people can't play regularly... and I think that by the end of the season the rotation will look something like this:

    Appling; Trice
    Harris; Kearney
    Dawson; Valentine
    Costello; Gauna
    Payne; Nix

Overall, it's an incredibly athletic and long team. I truly believe that Gary Harris will be a star as a freshman, and I'm excited about everyone who's returning. We'll obviously miss Green's leadership, but I have a feeling that Appling and Nix will tag-team the leadership duties and do just fine.

I expect us to battle it out with Indiana and scUM (assuming Burke and Hardaway really do stay) at the top of the B1G. Ohio State has a ton of talent, but they have no one coming in who can truly replace Sullinger's production and the attention he commands.

  • I feel really good about adding Harris, Costello & Valentine to go with Appling, Dawson, Payne, Nix & Trice. If Kaminski is as good as we think that he could be that would give us 9 strong players.

I'm not sure where I see Kearney, Gauna or Byrd fitting in at as it's unlikely that we'll play more than 9 deep & Harris obviously starts from day 1, Costello & Kaminski will both be needed to help replace DayDay & Valentine will be needed as someone who can come off the bench and run the point or play either Wing. I could maybe see Byrd as a situational sharp shooter. But Kearney & Gauna I'm not sure on. Hopefully they have amazing off seasons & step up.

I think it's possible 1 of Gauna, Byrd or Kearney could maybe look at other options for more playing time. If that happens we would look at a late addiction to the class or maybe another transfer - maybe UConn's Alex Oreochi or someone who is in the situation that Wood was in?

I disagree, Valentine is a passer, Appling struggles. I like...

    PG---Trice/Valentine
    2G----Appling/Harris/Kearney
    SF----Dawson/Byrd/Kaminski
    PF----Costello/Gauna
    C------Payne/Nix

With Payne, Nix, and Costello rotating so Nix can get some time at PF.

  • I'd like to see Nix at 5 and Payne at 4 on the floor at the same time.

    Yep, I agree.

    PassTheRock

  • Put Nix and Payne on the floor with Dawson, Harris and Appling.

Trice could see his minutes diminish and see his career path mirror Dahlman's.

Valentine has a real opportunity to make some noise.

  • I like Trice as a change of pace back-up. We need Trice for the next three years. Appling is a shooting guard playing point guard. Maybe he will improve over the summer and prove me wrong. I sure hope so.

  • Assuming the freshmen make the typical "jump" in ability in their sophomore year, we will be absolutely loaded. That being said, I'm not worried about the talent level. I'm just a little worried about who will fill the leadership void.

The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.

  • Talent and depth will be top 5 in the nation. Appling and Nix need to be more vocal. Talent can only get you so far. I agree, the only concern is who takes over the leadership role.

  • Anyone wonder if Izzo might consider going with a smaller, more athletic lineup like:

    1. Trice - 6'0"
    2. Appling - 6'1"
    3. Harris - 6'5"
    4. Dawson - 6'6"
    5. Payne/Nix - 6'10"/6'9"

I like that lineup, personally, but it could be too short for Izzo....

Edit: Added heights. We're going to have to rely on freshman more than I would normally prefer, but that mostly worked out well for us this year...

Screw it, let's go big. Make Byrd spend the off season working at the point and roll out an all 6'6"+ line up.

Byrd needs to have a good offseason. The kid is 6'7", he could be such a massive asset to us....

  • Guana will be the most improved next year. Suton/Granger type of power forward.

Agreed. That position decision wasn't based on pure-athleticism, just on how difficult it is for a true freshman to run the point, especially for Izzo.

By the end of the season, I would not be shocked if Valentine moved up to a 50/50 split, or even was the starter.

I completely agree that he could follow Suton's career path, and I would be stoked if we had 3 big men to rotate. In that scenario, our flexibility next year would be absolutely disgusting.

In reference to our big men, anyone know how tall Costello is? I've heard/read everything from 6'8" to 6'10". Anyone have a better idea?

  • Valentine already knows the offense. He lives 10 minutes from campus. Son of a coach and former spartan. He is ready to go right now.

  • There's one problem. Green has been the guy the team has leaned on for a couple years now. Most of the guys who will play came in under his supervision. The team will be young, most likely starting 2 freshmen, one soph, and two juniors. If we schedule like we normally do, it's going to force someone to be THE voice in the lockerroom. It may be Keith, it may be Nix, but you can't force it. If you try to force leadership instead of go with what's natural, you get a Kalin vs. Day Day situation all over again.

There will be a tipping point in our season where the team either explodes forward or stays stagnant. If that explosion happens early, then you're looking at another Final Four.

No leadership on the floor. I dont see MSU winning the BigTenChamo without Green.
