Lowest golf score ever: Australian dude shoots 55 in Oklahoma

  • I can't even imagine how good that feels.

Wet course, short course, sure, but still: 16-under 55 – USATODAY.com

If golf's magical number is 59, just how exactly do you describe Rhein Gibson's 16-under 55? How about near perfection.

    www.usatoday.com

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Pshh, I've done way better than that in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009.

RIP vbulletin. Bring back Rich Rod!

  • yeah and if a pro played some of the local courses around here they would probably shoot 20 under

  • What'd he get on the other 9?

    CivilEGR

  • He was hitting from the ladies' tees.

    Always Smooth.

  • No, they wouldn't.
You still have to put the ball in the hole. Putting would be a nightmare for the average pro on the local muni.

  • My neighbor the accountant shot a 29 at a local course in Jackson. He can drive the shit out of the ball and this course is very short, just about every par 4 is reachable if you can smash it.

Obviously this is 9 holes. Cool story bro.

  • Check out the link. It is legit. I came close to this once. But the windmill hole on 17 killed me.

The counter is that they'd be sticking their irons ultra close on every approach at a normal muni.

I don't care who you are or where you are, a 55 is unreal.

The course isn't really that short, it measures 6,700 yards. Most pro tournaments are in the 7,000-7,200 range.

The impressive part for me is he birdied all four par 3's, and they all range from 175-190 yards. Seldom do you see a pro or anyone ever do that. Check out the scorecard.

The most unimpressive thing is the course pro has never shot below 71 on that track.

Why? First of all, my muni is 6500 from the back tees. A Tour Pro would have a flip wedge to ever par 4 except one so as sptnbrn says they'd have short putts all day. The par 5's would play like par 4's.

    I agree with this

Pros are use to putting on absolutely perfect greens that are double rolled every night during tournaments

They just have to start the ball on line and it's going in, very few bumps and ball marks to hit

With that said, I'm sure they could still 2 putt for birdie on a lot of holes at a local muni

  • Bitch please. That's nothing.

There aren't going to be many bumps from where they'd be putting from at an average muni. Remember the average pro is used to trying hit irons onto much faster greens than you'd see at your average public course. Add in the fact that with the distance difference they'll be hitting most approaches with wedges, and they'd be hitting darts to every green. You also have to figure they'd be able to drive the green on multiple par 4's of a local muni.

  • Sorry. If it was that easy for a pro to shoot 55 you would be hearing about it all the time.
Even with wedges these guys aren't leaving every approach shot within kick-in range.

Tiger shot 59 back in 1997

    Bubba shot 58 last offseason

Those were at their upscale country clubs that they belong to, not at a local muni

Probably because there's almost no reason for the average pro to play at a local muni. The greens are much slower on average. The courses are much shorter even from the back tees. It would be like asking NBA players to shoot 3's from the high school line. All it would do is hurt them a little when they went back to normal PGA conditions.

I do too. Putting on a non-PGA track would be difficult for a pro, not so much on bumps, but on speed.

It's not like this guy didn't play lenghty par 5's, I think they were 505, 508, 551 and 542. Not that much different from what a pro faces each week.

Where this course is short is on the par 4's.

All's I'm saying is a 55 is unreal, you can post your Tiger shot 59 and Bubba shot 58, but did any of them shoot 55?

Bingo. The Golf Channel reported that according to Guinness, 55 is the lowest score ever recorded on a golf course over 6,600 yards.

Who just plays 9 holes? I don't understand that about people that live in Michigan. You guys have more hours of sunlight than most of the country but yet you limit yourselves to only half rounds.

It's a trait that is unique to Michiganders outside of after work weekday leagues. Honestly, as a golfer, it's lame. Color me unimpressed by any low 9 hole score. You need to hold it together for a full 18 before it means a damn thing. That's like saying Verlander had a no-no last night because he went 4.2 innings without a hit.

What's interesting is if you look at his front 9, he 'only' parred the par 5 and a short par 3. He must be kicking himself about those now. Those two could have gotten him down to 53. It's like they say, you can't beat the game.
