Lunardi Chat - MSU vs UNC/DUKE seeding

  • Looks the fans of the ACC are a little upset that MSU is on the one line. Joey Brackets is putting them in their place.

    Darren Bolick (Charlotte, NC)

Joe - you think way too much of MSU - while I think they are a top 10 team - they lost to both Duke and UNC this year - put them in the ACC and see where they finish. UNC and/or Duke should be in position for a #1 seed.

    Joe Lunardi (4:05 PM)

Correct, Darren. Michigan State lost to both ACC powers over four months ago. Since then the Spartans have collected more RPI Top 25 than Duke and Carolina combined. I think the real question is this: Would Duke or UNC win this year's Big Ten?

    Nick (Charlotte)

Joe, there is absolutely NO WAY that Michigan St is a 1 over Carolina. Not only did Carolina beat the Spartans but all of Carolina's losses came from teams that are seeded 5 or better in your bracket. Michigan St however lost to bubble team Northwestern and Illinois who you predict will only be in the NIT. Am I missing something here?

    Joe Lunardi (4:11 PM)

I respectfully disagree. Michigan State is 7-3 vs. RPI Top 25 and Carolina is 2-4. End of discussion.

    Sean (Oxford, Ohio)

I admit it's hard for me to understand why you've placed Michigan St. on the top line ahead of Duke. Is it due to the perception that MSU is as Jay Bilas has said 'red hot' and that Duke has had to rally to notch wins of late? I'm not a Duke fan but I feel as though there is often hesitation when it comes to putting to Duke in a slot for a number one seed ahead of other blue-blood programs.

    Joe Lunardi (4:17 PM)

My prior answers about Michigan State-Carolina apply to Duke, as well. Plus, you're talking the outright leader of the top conference vs. two teams in a three-way tie atop an admittedly "down" ACC. It's really not close, at least today.

  • Gosh I really wish we could play UNC and Duke today, we are a totally different team. Not saying we would win hands down, but I think they have the potential to be epic battles against top college basketball programs. We may get our chance next month.

We may not get a shot at Carolina or Duke specifically, but I think we get at least one shot against some top-tier program (Kentucky, Kansas, 'Cuse).

Not to jinx us, but I think this team has fought through so much and developed too much chemistry to be ousted in a early round to an inferior team.

I'm getting the same result reading it again as Zeke did. The writer is complaining that Duke isn't put ahead of other blue-blood programs which in this case would be Michigan State. (old shrug)

It's no secret that MSU is an elite blueblood program...the only ones that have a difficult time understanding that are self loathing MSU fans. Even Michigan fans know that MSU is a blueblood and an elite program.

  • No mention of the beating MSU put on FSU, the team that whacked Roy's Boys by 30 ?

    WBill19542

  • Funny to watch Joe confuse the shit out of these people with obvious facts.

    Larry Kazamias

  • Do they really not understand that the team leading the top conference in the RPI is always going to get major consideration for a 1 seed? Throw in the fact that MSU is 2nd in the RPI and has played as many games against the RPI top 25 as Duke and UNC have against the top 50 and the resume comparison makes it a no-brainer.

    Iowa State's final seed?

I see an 8/9 game for the Cyclones.

So MSU a #1 and Iowa State in the 8/9 game.....interesting....

So you're saying that the MSU SPARTANS ARE AN ELITE BASKETBALL PROGRAM? MSU BASKETBALL IS DEFINITELY A BLUEBLOOD BASKETBALL PROGRAM? MSU BASKETBALL - ELITE AND BLUEBLOOD. Is that what you're insinuating?

It was just a mistake; I didn't mean to let them take away my soul. Am I too old? Is it too late?

  • Stats are for winners. I love the whining Duke/UNC fan asking where MSU would finish in the (down) ACC this year. All over your face is where we'd finish, punk.

  • Holy crap, I didn't realize MSU was 7-3 vs. the RPI top 25. Anyone know State's top 50 W-L?

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Currently 7-4 against top 50 (Loss to #42 Northwestern). Almost 9-4 with two wins agains #52 Purdue.

If we beat Indiana and OSU we could potentially end up with a 9-3 record vs. Top 25.

Right. Did dook fans forget how they fared against OSU?

The same OSU that is now third in the Big Ten...

The thing I took from that questioner wasn't that MSU was a blueblood, which it is, but that he thinks there's a bias AGAINST Duke. If anything, Duke gets the benefit of more doubts and gets higher seeds than warranted. The idea of anti-Duke seeding bias is laughable.
