M Peter McPherson-what he's up to now...

  • Last week our own M Peter McPherson led a procession of the Presidents of the nation's Land Grant colleges to the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Land Grant Act. McPherson is the president of the Association of Public Universities and Land Grant Colleges.

Lou Anna Simon also participated in the event and both she and McPherson spoke at a conference held at the Library of Congress to commemorate the Act and its importance in American history.

Here is our former President along with Vartan Gregorian, former president of Brown University and current head of the Carnegie Corporation, and James Billington, the Librarian of Congress.

Good to see M Peter is still wearing the MSU green!

MSU still does not get the credit it deserves for the Land Grant legacy. Commemorations like this can only help.

  • I'm sorry, but I still can't forgive McPherson for completely destroying our football program in 1999. First he makes no effort to even try to keep Nick Saban here, but then he lets football players decide who the next coach would be.

Thank God for Dantonio, even though we're still recovering from what McPherson wrought.

    To be fair:

    1. I don't think McPherson could have kept Saban at MSU. Saban was always looking to move and would have gone somewhere, if not that year, than the next. Saban wanted a situation in which football was "the sport" at the school and the school was "the program" in the state. At MSU he would always have to share the spotlight with Izzo and UM.

    2. If you blame McPherson for Saban-Williams, you have to also give him credit for Izzo. He stuck with Izzo after the first two seasons when many (including myself) were not happy with losses to the likes of Detroit and the athletic department had to run commercials on campus cable begging students to buy lower level seats. He then kept Izzo when Ted Turner came calling with big money after the 2000 NC.

Neither Izzo nor basketball have anything to do with the McPherson-Saban dynamics. In fact, to this day Izzo maintains publicly that he deeply regrets not being available (he and his team were in Chapel Hill) when the LSU situation came to pass. He, more than anyone, wanted Saban to stay here. And his word carried a lot of weight by 1999.

Moreover, Dantonio doesn't feel at all that he's second fiddle to SCum OR Izzo. And he's having tremendous success. And as much as I love Coach D and am grateful we have him, he isn't half the football coach Saban is (and it pains me to say that, because I do think Saban is kind of a prick...then again, so was Bo, and Woody, and Bear Bryant).

Finally, Saban has gone on record several times saying he wanted to stay here (he even tried to come back once after accepting the LSU job), But every damn time he tried to get together with McPherson to clarify his vision for MSU football, McPherson was either disinterested, or outright laughed in Saban's face.

Bottom line, McPherson didn't give Saban close to the respect he had earned by 1999.

This is such a fascinating, albeit disheartening, aspect of Spartan athletics history. It seems like everything under McPherson's watch leaves a trail of 'what-ifs.'

Saban is a great coach but he bascially created SOS. How many games did we choke away when he was here? We haven't seen that with Dantonio.

I'm sorry, but I still can't forgive McPherson for completely destroying our football program in 1999. First he makes no effort to even try to keep Nick Saban here,

    This is false.

After the 1999 Michigan game, Saban storms into McPherson's office and demands a pay raise for he and his staff. McPherson told Saban that he agreed and that he would work with his administration and the athletic director to come up with a good compensation package for he and his staff...and it would take about a month to get it done. There was a good faith agreement to get this done at the end of the season.

McPherson didn't have much clout with the alumni because the 1998 season was disastrous and after 4 years, Saban had only improved the program by 1/2 of a game from what he inherited from Perles. Perles left a 5-6 team that was a few plays from being 8-3 in the "must have a successful season" 1994 season. Many of the top donors wanted Saban fired after the 1998 season. Saban had lost the team multiple times that season.

A few days after the last game of the season, Saban and his wife sneak down to baton rouge. He agrees to become LSU's coach BEFORE word got out that he was visiting LSU. In fact, MSU is not contacted for permission to interview Saban until Saban was heading back to MSU as LSU's new coach. Saban doesn't even clean out his own office...he sends his wife to to it.

Saban breeched the good faith agreement that he and McPherson had in place. McPherson had no chance to make this right.

Where I fault McPherson is for not firing Saban after the 1998 season. A new coach would have come in and won with the talent that MSU had in 1999. Even though 1999 was a great season from a win-loss standpoint, MSU still managed to underachieve by losing to a Purdue team that had no business beating MSU. Wisconsin was the only team on the schedule that MSU had less than a 51% chance to defeat. All other games on the schedule, MSU was the better team with the better talent. A new coach would have come in and won...and would have still pulled in the great recruiting class.

MSU fans only talk about Saban because he had the great success at LSU...at LSU he learned to be a great coach once he was able to lock down his in-state talent...and use the $$$ of boosters to open up the pipeline of talent from across the fertile home region.

I wish this was true, but it's false. Saban has never gone on record saying that. He is on record saying that he never called Underwood asking for his job back.

There's a lot of revisionist history, but none of it ever can get past the fact that Saban breeched his good faith agreement with McPherson and that Saban's antics lost him confidence with the alumni base after the disastrous 1998 season.
