MLive - Izzo says MSU has lost recruits b/c he won't cheat

  • Tom Izzo to USA Today: Michigan State has lost recruits because he won't cheat

As the NCAA cracks down on AAU teams that have ties to agents, Izzo points to the cheating that goes on as having a negative impact on Michigan State's ability to certain recruits.

  • What's he mean by this statement? That the elite programs are cheating or don't have to worry about cheating?

"What's hard is that sometimes the elites of the elites don't have to deal with it," Izzo told the paper. "It's the middle rung, the Marylands, the Michigan States, the Texases, that are in that middle. That is a problem."

That he doesn't think UNC or Duke have to cheat to get good players.

UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke... the names sell themselves. They don't need to cheat to get elite players (though some still might.)

Not sure either, I think he's basically saying that Duke and NC don't have to cheat because they'll get those players anyway, but it's harder for schools like Maryland, MSU, and Texas because there is more of a temptation to cheat because they don't regularly get the top tier players.

The NCAA needs to seriously crack down. It's ridiculous that agents can sponser AAU teams and have access to the players, that goes against everything the NCAA is supposed to stand for. I mean, you have rappers not associated with Kentucky in any way getting Championship Rings from Calipari. It's a joke.

My take would be that they don't have to cheat to get elite players, they DO have to cheat to get classes comprised ENTIRELY of elite players in CONSECUTIVE years.

Izzo has often stated that as far as recruiting goes, elite players seem to fall into UNC's lap, while he has to work his ass off to get comparable results.

  • Barnes is one of the best recruiters and gets NBA type kids. All he does is get one and dones. Why did he mention Texas

The NCAA simply doesn't have the personnel to police AAU basketball. Izzo is right, the only way to do it would be to put everything under one umbrella (USA Basketball) and have the NCAA somehow allow that umbrella to police on its behalf.

He didn't put our program on their level, he put our name recognition or program respect on that level in the eyes of recruits.

Yeah, sometimes the lack of historical context among the posters here blows my mind. There are no programs higher than Kentucky. It'd be like talking about Football blue bloods and saying Alabama is prolly at that level now that they won last season. I know this board runs the gamut from current students to old dirts, but still, respect your history people. There are 5 blue bloods in basketball, and debatably a 6th:

UCLA, Kentucky, UNC, Indiana, Duke... maybe Kansas. MSU is on the outside looking in. The split second the play clock strikes zero on Izzo's 2nd title, and MSU's 3rd, next April, then we will join that party.

UK has always been a blue blood, of course. Just saying that they haven't always been as ludicrously strong in recruiting as they are now. They had periods before Pitino, with Tubby, with Gillespie where they were nowhere near as strong as they are now. UCLA has had similar ups and downs, as has IU. Over the last 30 years, the only programs who haven't seen appreciable ups and downs are UNC, Duke, and Kansas in terms of recruiting, and all have has 1 or 2 year dips.

  • Izzo is a realist and I like that about him. There are programs that don't have to cheat to land top recruits; there are programs that cheat to maintain that elite status; and I think he is speaking about the challenges for programs who aspire to that level to reach it without taking shortcuts. I'd love to hear him name names, schools, and coaches in the questionable category, but he's still a working coach.......
