MSU #8 in coaches (Updated: #7 AP)

  • ESPN's new BPI is something curious to watch. It hasn't been updated yet for this weekend's game.

#11 going on the road and winning decisively over #3 in the first meeting between the two, giving both teams equal records in conference play, merits #11 jumping #3.

I don't care what Izzo says, there is absolutely no logical argument out there that can put OSU ahead of us in the polls.

And to those of you that don't think this matters - remember that when OSU and MSU are being debated for a #1 seed, OSU gets the nod being higher in the polls and we get stuck as the #2 with Kentucky or Syracuse. It absolutely matters.

We play them one more time, so don't get your panties in a bunch.

If we're being debated for a #1, we won't play cuse and kentucky - S-Curve, FTW!

Except that the selection committee doesn't use the polls as criteria for seeding.

But they DO use RPI...a metric in which we number 4 in the country PRIOR to beating Ohio St.

The polls aren't just subjectively meaningless in college hoops. They are objectively meaningless as well.

  • Looks ok to me. Keep winning and we will be in the hunt for a 1 or 2 seed. I'll be disappointed if we do not stay in the top 8 come selection day.

  • I wonder if anyone would pick the Coaches' #3,4,5 to beat the #6,7,8? I sure wouldn't. There's going to be a lot of exciting 2 vs. 3 seed and 1 vs. 4 seed games this year.

Only thing I can think of is that OSU ripped Duke a new one in the ACC-B10 Challege. ( Duke being a #4 team)

Yea, overall it's fair. Just logic would tell you that a team A, who beats team B on team B's home court by 10 points, is a better team than team B. But oh well

Yes, because, after all, the rankings are based on just one game.

  • i really don't understand Kansas at 4 and 5.....on a neutral court we beat them 8 out of 10. They only beat OSU because Sullinger was out...Self has the same problem Matta does - no bench whatsoever. They have early exit written all over them.

That's a bullshit cop-out. If MSU had won by one or two scores you could make a case for ranking OSU higher, but the Spartans flat-out wiped the floor with them. If MSU is good enough to be one spot behind the Buckeyes, beating them by 10 definitely proves they're good enough to be one spot ahead of them.

strength of schedule? Michigan's SOS is around 10th in the nation. Virginia's is around 124.

That would be worth debating if they didn't play heads up.

And to the person that negged my original post... I hope you meet the same fate as Alan Ruck.

Looking at that list, the top 8 seemed to all be a step ahead of the rest of the teams. It seems like you could re-arrange most of the 2-8 teams and have a fair argument.

Agreed. The national champion is going to come out of the current top8.

Wiped the floor with them? Are we now on MGoBlog? It was a great victory but let's not get out of hand. It's not like we had Ianni & the boys in the game with down the stretch. Izzo called a timeout with 6 minutes left in the game and a 4 point lead.

OSU beat Duke by 30 and Duke's ahead of them. UNC beat us by 12, which I guess is wiping the floor with us, and we're ahead of them in one poll. When you're 9 spots behind a team in the polls late in the season one game rarely jumps you over said team.

    This.

Polls in college hoops mean absolutely nothing. Just something for fans to look at. The committee does not even so much as glance at them.

    I agree with this.

I think maybe we should be a spot or two higher, but really, we're the second highest-ranked five-loss team, so that's not bad (and as someone pointed out above, the five-loss Jayhawks are kind of fraudulent IMO).
